Sasquatch Genesis- the Origin of Bigfoot
The Theory of Human Hyridization with an Archaic Hominin Lineage
As you travel back through time to the distant past, 15,000 years ago, the European subcontinent is a very different place. It is wild and savage, covered with a mantle of ice and snow lasting almost half the year. You look down from the entrance of a cave to the windswept, rocky plateau below and see the surging herds of the great beasts: mammoth, wooly rhinoceros and bison as they press ever more southward, fleeing from the biting north wind. The snow lions, dire wolves and cave hyena stalk the herds, preying on the stragglers. Year by year, this part of the world has grown colder and more inhospitable. An ice age has descended, the glaciers sweeping south, down beyond what is now Poland, Germany and deep into France.
The humans, ancestors of modern Europeans who migrated northward in warmer times, have been forced to retreat back to lower latitudes. Now they have reached the foothills of the Alps. The mountain range to the south is a formidable barrier. The humans are trapped in this last refuge from the encroaching glaciers. Their numbers have dwindled drastically, the survivors engaged in a grim daily battle for survival. Among their competitors are other descendants of their distant ancestors, a race of huge, hair-covered beings that arrived on the continent hundreds of thousands of years before them. These beings prefer the dark of night and are seldom seen in daylight. These Progenitors of the Sasquatch are hardy, more adapted to the cold. They are also few in number, and they hunt and forage over vast distances. They are much like humans in many ways, but much more ancient, and more feral in aspect. They have no need of man's fire, spear or arrow. The humans, even with their primitive tools and fire-building skills, have an increasingly difficult time. Many cannot survive during the high snows and near-arctic cold of winter. Even the hairy
giants, the Ancient Ones, seek the shelter of caves in mid-winter. In this place and time, a most remarkable and significant event takes place.
As the bitter cold of winter deepens, a family of the ancient race travels along a rocky ridge, seeking suitable shelter. The female, a mother of two young juveniles, finds a small cave on the slope. She peers inside and sees the the faint glow of dying embers from a human's fire. She hears the whimper of a small human child, a girl that has been orphaned. Her mother had left only for a moment to look out from the cave in search of her mate, but slipped on the icy surface and fell to her doom. The girl's father also perished in the cold while desperately foraging for food.
The Progenitor mother gently picks up the human child, who is wrapped in a soft deer pelt. The girl is so tiny, so helpless, and so much like her own newborn babes once were. She is moved to compassion for the orphaned waif. Her own children regard the child with curiosity and an almost immediate affection, much as we humans might be endeared to a puppy or kitten. The archaic family adopts and nurtures this young human. There are no other humans of her kind for many leagues in any direction, and also very few of the giant's kind in this region as well. In time, the Ancient Ones become her family; they are all she has ever known since she was adopted. She has little or no memory of her parents. The Progenitors are considerate and kindly, and with them she grows in mutual affection and familial support. In time, as a mature adult, she selects one of the grown offspring as her mate. The two species are are related closely enough that they are genetically compatible, and they in turn have fertile offspring. The human female thus has become the founding matriarch of a new lineage of hominins, a mitochondrial "Eve" for what we now call the Sasquatch.
The matriarchal "Eve" is an exceptional mother, intelligent, resourceful and affectionate. Her children are blessed with the best traits of both their genetic lineages. The father of this new lineage is a skilled hunter and forager, diligent in his efforts for his family's welfare. The small family thrives even in the worst conditions, and in time grows into a mighty clan that will venture out across Europe and cross the steppes of Asia. They follow the herds of fauna across Beringia, the land bridge that connects Siberia with North America in that epoch. Their descendants populate the New World. There they also find other members of their patriarch's ancestral tribe, Ancient Ones that migrated there during the intermittent ice ages, in previous millennia.
This scenario is presented as an introduction to what may be regarded as plausible theory on the origins of the Sasquatch, also known as Bigfoot, existing today in North America. "Theory" is not used in a loose or general sense in this essay, as it is based on actual genetic sequencing data, the fundamental interpretation of which has recently been announced as of this writing. The full study, headed by Dr. Melba Ketchum, is soon to be published in a peer reviewed science journal.
The genetic sequencing of over 100 specimens, in mitochondrial and nuclear DNA ranges, including 3 full genome sequencing, is an unprecedented and groundbreaking achievement, and will certainly be one of the most significant scientific discoveries of the 21st century.
The announced findings closely parallel the information that I have independently assembled from many sources, including my own field research. In previous essays, I presented the hypothesis that Sasquatch are a hybrid of modern humans and a progenitor species- archaic hominins, possibly a lineage of what are currently classified as Homo Hiedlebergensis. The Progenitor hypothesis can now be considered a viable theory in that the hard evidence, particularly the sequencing of the Nuclear DNA, which I did not have access to at the time, has now almost unequivocally indicated human/hominin hybridization. I do not know if the exact identification of the archaic hominin, has been established through DNA comparisons. I suggest that further studies compare DNA from the specimens of H. Heidlebergensis specimens of the Atapuerca site, in Spain, if the DNA is recoverable. Fossil skeletal remains of H. Heidelbergensis are those that most closely resemble that of the Sasquatch. (see links to previously published articles in the Resources section below.) Here is an important disclaimer: I have not seen the published study and do not have inside information on the publisher and release date. The assessment of the data may differ significantly from my conclusions presented here; this is my own summary based in part on my own field research, which includes documented footprints, trackways, scat and hair samples, hand-prints, the use of symbols and primitive tools, and various encounters and up-close sightings, as well as genetic sequencing outside of the Ketchum study.
In the press release by Dr. Ketchum, there is mention that the mitochondrial DNA, which is inherited from only the females in a lineage, matches DNA of Modern Humans from about 15,000 years ago in South Central Europe. According to my research, this epoch is known as the Franco-Cambrian Ice Age in Europe and also as the Wisconsin Glaciation in North America. The area of Europe, which remained free of glaciers is referred to as the Franco-Cambrian Refuge, because it was a somewhat isolated region where the climate could still support some of the flora and fauna of the northern hemisphere. Humankind in Europe reached a "bottle-neck", a severe reduction of the population to a small percentage of its former numbers, at that time. Under these pressing circumstances, the surviving humans were brought into close contact with the archaic hominins. For a new hybrid lineage to be established, there would necessarily have to be strong familial bonds, which form under the optimal conditions of mutual affection and commitment, such as presented in the proposed scenario above.
The nuclear DNA as reported has sequences that are not shared by currently sequenced hominins or higher primates, such as Neanderthals and Denisovans in the hominins, or gorillas and chimpanzees in the "great apes". Nuclear DNA (nDNA) includes sequences inherited from the males of the lineage. The differences in that nDNA from other primates and known hominins in conjunction with the human mitochondrial DNA is an almost certain indication that what we know as Sasquatch or Bigfoot are primarily a hybrid species, as evidenced in the more than 100 specimens sequenced in the Ketchum study.
There may also be small, scattered populations of archaic hominins still extant that have little or none of the human mitochondrial DNA, that were not represented in the study specimens, both in the Americas and other continents. The Yeti of the Himalayas in particular, may be much closer to the original progenitor species of the paternal lineage. Another possibility to investigate are the Yeren, of China. The Almasty of Russia and Europe are likely closely related to the Sasquatch, though they quite possibly have interbred more with humans. (see the story of Zana listed in the resources section below.)
Another intriguing aspect of the mtDNA sequencing, according to some reports, is that there are some specimens that appear to have sequences shared with some of the most ancient human lineages or haplogroups yet sequenced- similar to that of the Vasikela Kung of South Africa, who speak Khoisan, a language that includes clicks and whistles. (Sasquatch appear to use clicks and whistles to communicate in a similar fashion). If this correlation is correct, and similar data is included in the published study, it may indicate that the Progenitors of the Sasquatch also migrated into the Americas in sporadic waves over several millennia, with some lineages arriving from non-European groups during the earliest Ice Ages.
Additional evidence that could support the study's findings is the filmed high definition footage of Sasquatch, DNA specimens of which are reported to have been included in the Ketchum study. The documentary footage results from the efforts of the Erickson Project, headed by Adrian Erickson. More information can be found at the official site, Sasquatch Quest.
The discovery of a new human/hominin lineage may reveal a genetics "Rosetta Stone" a key to understanding the course of human evolution and the intricate mechanisms of gene expression across subspecies lines. Aspects of the robust genetics of a more ancient or original progenitor may give us insight into the causes and cure of genetic diseases and disorders, and augment gene therapy techniques. Study of the living Sasquatch will yield a wealth of knowledge for anthropologists and open new avenues of inquiry into the origins and nature of Humankind.
