Bigfoot Evidence: Reply to the DNA Analysis

Ok, so it has been concluded that the species of origin that is the major contributor of nuclear and mitochondrial DNA in Justin Smeja's sample is a female black bear, Ursus americanus. The sample also yielded human mitochondrial DNA-- Justin Smeja's DNA. Even though the tissue sample was recovered 5 weeks after the shooting of the two Bigfoots, it was likely that the flesh could have belonged to other animals in the area, including bear or coyote. Many people, including myself hoped that the tissue would turn out to be an unknown primate of some sort. When Smeja returned to the scene to recover the body, the place was under a 3-4 feet of snow, and unfortunately, the tissue was all he was able recover. It was discovered on a slope near a tree stump a few yards from where he hid the juvenile's body.

Rights For Bigfoot Petition

In a recent news release concerning her 5-year study on the DNA of the Sasquatch, Dr. Melba S. Ketchum called for government at all levels to recognize the human and Constitutional rights of these newly discovered indigenous people.

Now a petition has been created to gather support for that effort. Won't you please take the time to read and sign the petition:

Bigfoot Evidence: It's Not About The Bloggers...

Editor's Note: This is a guest post by Mike A.
a Sasquatch enthusiast and a member of the Facebook group, Team Tazer Bigfoot.

So, the Ketchum Study...it seems destined that this is going to turn into yet another culture war within the squatching community, so be it.

First the facts: The paper is claimed to have been submitted to peer review within the US, and was rejected. It is allegedly now seeking peer review in Russia. If these "facts" are not true then the Ketchum camp should step out and clarify where things are without all the skullduggery that has recently occurred. The simple fact is many a rumor has been thrown into the mix of late and the onus is on them to clear up any falsifications, it is after all, THEIR paper, THEIR study.....

This was also a recent topic on Cryptomundo which sought to see the reason why Igor Burtsev had prematurely leaked the story of the study and then decided to re-submit it for publication in Russia.

The CFZ's posting on this resulted in the following message posted yesterday:

And This was my reply, still waving the same red flag,

Dale Drinnon There is a consistant problem about Melba Ketchum's study that is never addressed, and whenever I try to bring it up I get called a troublemaker. I cannot say if this is actually in the paper or not because I have not seen the paper. But the public announcements I have seen always seem to say that the nuclear DNA was analysed to determine what was going on in the male side of the inheritance. Only that is stated wrong, the nuclear DNA contains materials from BOTH parents-half from either one. I keep trying to get some sort of admission or denial about this but I never get a direct statement. Last time I tried bringing it up I was told "That's all speculative": it is NOT speculative it is basic heredity and basic to DNA science, and saying that it IS speculative shows a genuine ignorance of the topic.

Which drew this reply:
Jeffrey Teagle You are correct Dale.....I stopped talking to people about the study here too. Why do people defend this lady; I have NO idea?

Statements From Igor Burtsev Regarding Rejection of Ketchum's Paper By U.S. Peer Review Journals

Update from Bigfoot Evidence:

Statements From Igor Burtsev Regarding Rejection of Ketchum's Paper By U.S. Peer Review Journals

Thursday, December 6, 2012

Russian scientist, Igor Burtsev is currently making his rounds on Facebook doing his best to address the rejection of Dr. Melba Ketchum's Bigfoot DNA paper by U.S. peer review journals. Burtsev claims that he has Ketchum's paper in his possession (yes, it's real after all) and it consists of "50 pages of the main text, a lot of pics, graphs, and supplements". "It is more than enough to understand her study," he says.

He compares the Ketchum situation to the war between the North and the South. He believes the problem is a "SOCIAL one, and less - SCIENTIFIC one":

SUBSEQUENT STATEMENT by Igor Burtsev:
I didn't suppose people, that you are so much seek of the publication in a reviewed journal. I though that more important is the result of study. And I informed the public about it in short.
But as you are so seek in scientific publication, I talked only about my side, I meant the publication in Russia. Yes, the process of reviewing here is going, but not so quick as desired. Yes, I submitted the paper to a Russian journal. And the process of reviewing here started while the journal to which Dr Ketchum sent the paper, had not yet reflected the interest to publish it.
But Dr. Ketchum submitted the paper to the journal on your side again. And now they admitted it for reviewing. Thus, now a kind of competition arose: which journal is ready to publish it earlier and ensures her, that one will publish it. And another one will be asked to stop the process.
I explained such a state with publication in FB before, a couple of days ago. I thought that you know. But I see, some reporters wish to dramatize the state, and just a little correcting my words, pass some disinformation to make people exited.

Bigfoot Genome?

Bigfoot Genome?

When a company announced last week that they had sequenced the Bigfoot genome, it seemed too good to be true. And probably is.

For decades, people who believe that Bigfoot is a real animal that lives in the hinterlands of North America have been waiting for proof of its existence. So, when a DNA diagnostics company published a press release on their website last week claiming to have sequenced the Bigfoot genome, it seemed too good to be true.
In the press release, DNA Diagnostics claimed that Texas veterinarian Melba Ketchum had sequenced the DNA of Bigfoot (aka Sasquatch). The company stated that the sequencing results confirm that Bigfoot exists and is a “novel hominin hybrid species...a human relative that arose approximately 15,000 years ago as a hybrid cross of modern Homo sapiens with an unknown primate species.”
So, do Bigfoot enthusiasts have reason to rejoice? Well, not just yet.
In response, the science blogosphere erupted with skepticism, and even ridicule, of Ketchum and her team. The press release is short on details and states that the study is still under peer review. So, no one can get a look at the actual data. Without that, it’s impossible to evaluate Ketchum’s claims.
According to the press release, Ketchum’s team sequenced 20 whole mitochondrial genomes and three whole nuclear genomes from “purported Sasquatch samples.” Their analysis allegedly found that Sasquatch’s mitochondrial DNA was identical to that of modern humans, but that the nuclear DNA was “a novel, unknown hominin” resulting from males of “an unknown hominin species” that contains “distinctly non-human, non-archaic hominin, and non-ape sequences.”
David Coltman, a geneticist with the University of Alberta, believes that plenty of caution is needed before interpreting this press release as proof of Bigfoot. “Until you see anything in peer review, there is nothing really to go by. And even if it does appear in a peer-reviewed journal, that doesn’t mean it’s true,” he said.
In 2006, Coltman and colleagues sequenced a supposed Bigfoot hair sample collected in Teslin, Yukon (1). The results showed it was just bison hair.
His biggest question about the new press release is how the hypothesized hybrid could possibly occur. “There’s a logical problem there, from a biology perspective. If Sasquatch is a hybrid between a primate more distant from the great apes and a human, their genomes would be incompatible. They wouldn’t be able to reproduce.”
So, what exactly might Ketchum have sequenced? Coltman doesn’t know for sure, but he said that it’s easy to pick up human mitochondrial DNA because of contamination, and that the nuclear DNA could represent environmental noise, more contamination of yeast, fungi, or other microorganisms–very common occurrences with any forensic sample. “There are big piles of DNA sequence that come out of any environmental sample that don’t line up to anything,” he said.
In the end, Coltman said that it’s next to impossible to prove that something doesn’t exist. Just because Ketchum’s DNA sequencing study may eventually prove to be bogus, an artifact of processing or contamination of the sample, doesn’t mean that there can’t be a Bigfoot out there somewhere, just waiting to be discovered–and its genome sequenced.

Melba Ketcham's Official Announcement

From Dr. Ketchum, herself:

Below is our official response:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

‘BIGFOOT’ DNA SEQUENCED IN UPCOMING GENETICS STUDY

Five-Year Genome Study Yields Evidence of Homo sapiens/Unknown Hominin Hybrid Species in North America

Contact: Robin Lynne, media@dnadiagnostics.com, 231.622.5362

DALLAS, Nov. 24--A team of scientists can verify that their 5-year long DNA study, currently under peer-review, confirms the existence of a novel hominin hybrid species, commonly called “Bigfoot” or “Sasquatch,” living in North America. Researchers’ extensive DNA sequencing suggests that the legendary Sasquatch is a human relative that arose approximately 15,000 years ago as a hybrid cross of modern Homo sapiens with an unknown primate species.

The study was conducted by a team of experts in genetics, forensics, imaging and pathology, led by Dr. Melba S. Ketchum of Nacogdoches, TX. In response to recent interest in the study, Dr. Ketchum can confirm that her team has sequenced 3 complete Sasquatch nuclear genomes and determined the species is a human hybrid:

“Our study has sequenced 20 whole mitochondrial genomes and utilized next generation sequencing to obtain 3 whole nuclear genomes from purported Sasquatch samples. The genome sequencing shows that Sasquatch mtDNA is identical to modern Homo sapiens, but Sasquatch nuDNA is a novel, unknown hominin related to Homo sapiens and other primate species. Our data indicate that the North American Sasquatch is a hybrid species, the result of males of an unknown hominin species crossing with female Homo sapiens.

Hominins are members of the taxonomic grouping Hominini, which includes all members of the genus Homo. Genetic testing has already ruled out Homo neanderthalis and the Denisova hominin as contributors to Sasquatch mtDNA or nuDNA. “The male progenitor that contributed the unknown sequence to this hybrid is unique as its DNA is more distantly removed from humans than other recently discovered hominins like the Denisovan individual,” explains Ketchum.

“Sasquatch nuclear DNA is incredibly novel and not at all what we had expected. While it has human nuclear DNA within its genome, there are also distinctly non-human, non-archaic hominin, and non-ape sequences. We describe it as a mosaic of human and novel non-human sequence. Further study is needed and is ongoing to better characterize and understand Sasquatch nuclear DNA.”

Ketchum is a veterinarian whose professional experience includes 27 years of research in genetics, including forensics. Early in her career she also practiced veterinary medicine, and she has previously been published as a participant in mapping the equine genome. She began testing the DNA of purported Sasquatch hair samples 5 years ago.

Ketchum calls on public officials and law enforcement to immediately recognize the Sasquatch as an indigenous people:

“Genetically, the Sasquatch are a human hybrid with unambiguously modern human maternal ancestry. Government at all levels must recognize them as an indigenous people and immediately protect their human and Constitutional rights against those who would see in their physical and cultural differences a ‘license’ to hunt, trap, or kill them.”

Full details of the study will be presented in the near future when the study manuscript publishes.

*Unfortunately for this announcement and I have previously pointed out, We know NOTHING of other Hominid species' Nuclear DNA. What we have is the mitochondrial (mt) DNA: That is the part which is retained in fossils. The statements as given for Neanderthal and Denisovan Nuclear DNA are without any base data to go on*

Urgent Message from Igor Burtsev, Melba Ketcham Announcement

Facebook notice from Igor Burtsev

Igor Burtsev updated his status: "Urgent! The DNA analysis of the Bigfoot/Sasquatch specimen conducted by Dr. Melba Ketchum the head of DNA Diagnostics, Timpson, TX, USA has been over[finished]!

Team of American scientists led by Dr. Melba Ketchum for five years has analyzed 109 purported samples of such creatures. The study has sequenced DNA of a novel North American hominin, commonly called Bigfoot or Sasquatch. There were a large number of laboratories associated with this study including academic, private and government laboratories in which blind testing was utilized to avoid prejudice in testing. Great time and care was taken in the forensic laboratories to assure no contamination occurred with any of the samples utilized in this study. After 5 years of this study the scientists can finally answer the question of what sasquatch really is. It is human like us only different, a hybrid of a human with unknown species. Early field research shows that the Bigfoot/Sasquatches are massively intelligent which has enabled them to avoid detection to a large extent. They are different than us, however human nonetheless. The hybridization event could not have occurred more than 15000 years ago according to the mitochondrial data in some samples. Origin of this hominin was probably Middle Eastern/Eastern Europe and Europe originally though other geographic areas are not excluded. The manuscript associated with this study has been submitted to a scientific reviewed magazine. For years people have refused to believe they exist. Now that we know that they are real, it is up to us to protect them from those that would hunt or try to capture them for research or for sport. They should be left alone to live as they live now. After all, they are our relatives. At this time, analysis of the Sasquatch genomes is still ongoing. Further data will be presented in the future following this original study. Additionally, analysis of various hair samples purportedly from Siberian Wildman are being tested in an effort to determine if relatedness exists between the Sasquatch and Russian Wildman. Bigfoot News September 14, 2012

Olympic Project successful submissions to Dr. Melba Ketchum DNA project revealed. A source has informed me that the Olympic Project submitted ~103 hair samples to Ketchum’s project, and ~85 of them tested presumptive to Bigfoot by DNA. Another ~18 Olympic Project hair samples were apparently from either humans or known animals. Those 85 successful submissions represent anywhere from 5-13 separate creatures.
Apparently all of the hair was gathered in the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state. This makes the Olympic Project the largest submitter to the project.
Updated list of successful samples to Ketchum Project. Here it is:
Rundown of samples in the Ketchum study. This will be updated every time it changes.
Bigfoot samples submitted: Over 200
Presumptive for Bigfoot: Almost 100
# of Bigfoot individuals represented: 20-28
Details of successful Bigfoot samples:
5 hair samples from Golden Ears Provincial Park in British Columbia representing 3 separate creatures – a male, a female and a juvenile from a family unit who were observed together prior to collecting the samples – gathered in 2010 by Randy Brisson of the Erickson Project.
1 toenail from Larry Jenkins in the Grand Canyon area of Arizona.
1 blood sample from JC Johnson in the Four Corners area of New Mexico (skunk in a drainpipe sample).
1 blood and tissue sample of a female Bigfoot representing either “Matilda” or her mother from Crittenden, Kentucky, gathered by the Dennis Pfohl and Leila Hadj-Chikh of the Erickson Project. Sample was obtained by gluing glass shards on a feeding plate.
1 hair sample from David Paulides’ NABS known as the Ulibarri sample from Hoopa Valley, California.
1 hair sample from Larry Surface in Southern Ohio. Surface shot the controversial nighttime Bigfoot video that was pulled from the web a while back.
1 hair sample (possible Dogman) from Joe Black in the Great Smoky Mountains, Eastern Tennessee.
1 tissue (flesh including muscle and fat) sample in the form of a slice of Bigfoot flesh from Mount Haskell, California from the adult male Bigfoot shot dead on October 10, 2010 by Justin Smeja in the Sierra Kills incident.
1 large sample of saliva from the Olympic Peninsula, Washington, collected by the Olympic Project obtained via a Bigfoot licking a trail camera.
1 hair sample from SE Oklahoma collected by TEXLA Cryptozoological Research.
1 blood, tissue and hair sample from a nailboard trap at Snelgrove Lake, Ontario, Canada (presumably successful).
~85 hair samples from the Olympic Peninsula, Washington, collected by the Olympic Project representing 5-13 separate individuals.
That is apparently all or nearly all of the nearly 100 successful Bigfoot samples. The other 100 samples are all apparently from either humans or known animals.
Best Bigfoot samples: Smeja’s Bigfoot steak and JC Johnson’s skunk in a drainpipe Bigfoot blood sample.
Who bailed out Adrian Erickson? Last fall, Erickson was in deep doodoo financially. He was working 6 days a week, 12 hours a day trying to keep his real estate business above water. He was being sued by several parties, including the buyers of his homes. He was under a lot of physical and psychological toll – basically a stress case. His numerous investors were getting upset.
Erickson built a large real estate development in British Columbia called Ruby Ridge. He sold a number of lots but then became underwater with the US recession caused by radical neoliberal capitalism’s unregulated banking sector and massive bankster fraud. This neoliberalism-generated recession affected the whole world, including Canada. Erickson was having a hard time selling homes due to the downturn in the housing market.
He had promised buyers are variety of amenities for their lots including phone and cell coverage, water, sewage lines and roads. With no more money coming in, he was unable to provide these amenities. Through no fault of Erickson’s, his lot buyers were left holding the bag.
He also spent $3 million on his Bigfoot project, the Erickson Project, with no results to show for it yet.
Things looked grim. The prospect of bankruptcy for the business and foreclosure on Erickson’s very nice home loomed.
I’m not divulging too much personal information here as most of this has already been reported in the British Columbia press.
Here it is, 9 months later, and everything has changed. Early in the year, Erickson apparently took his Bigfoot documentary to Hollywood where it was worked on with post-production editing. In the interim, Erickson’s financial problems seem to have evaporated or at least gotten much better. The word we have is that financially, things are going quite well.
This does not make sense. The housing market in BC has not returned since last fall, so he’s not selling anymore homes than he was then. How did he get the money to send the doc to Hollywood to have it worked on? It makes no sense, because at the time it was down there, Erickson was flat broke. How did he get the huge amount of money needed to bail him out of the financial hole? He could not have made it selling lots. Someone must have bailed him out in some way.
Erickson is now happy and calm and is no longer working all the time. He is back guiding hunts and again, and he’s going to Africa soon to hunt. He seems relaxed about the subject of Bigfoot and acts like it is out of his hands and his life.
Whereas previously for a long time, he got angry anytime anyone brought up the subject. On numerous occasions, Erickson said he didn’t want to hear the word Bigfoot ever again. Furthermore, Erickson and Ketchum, who never got along, have now mysteriously become BFF’s.
Logically, none of this makes any sense. The only way this could have happened is that an unknown person or persons with a lot of money stepped in and got Erickson out of his hole by sending a lot of money his way, either via gift or investment.
I suspected that Wally Hersom gave Erickson the cash to get him out of the hole he was in and to send the documentary down to Hollywood.
However, when I asked around, a source close to Hersom emphatically told me that he strongly doubted that Hersom had either bailed Erickson out or even given him the money to take his doc to Hollywood to have it worked on.
There is suspicion that Ketchum is now the owner of Erickson’s footage, but it has been impossible to confirm. However, it does remain a hunch of mine for reasons I cannot divulge.
The events surrounding Erickson and his movie in the last 9 months remain shrouded in mystery.
Photos and video of Bigfoots exist that are better than the Patterson footage. Photos and video have been shot in the past 20 years that are said to be better than the Patterson footage. They are better than the Patterson footage in that it is clearer. At least a couple of them were shot in the Pacific Northwest.
A source who has seen the footage says that there is no way it could have been hoaxed. In both cases, the persons who own the footage refuse to release it because of the Hellish notoriety of publicity that cascades down on anyone who releases purported Bigfoot footage. The crucifixion of Melissa Hovey over her photo is a good recent example.

--By my classification, nearly all "Other" samples excluding the Olympic Hair and saliva sample, and the BC hair samples-possibly also other samples from California OTHER than the Smeja "Sierra Kills" samples-all belong to the Eastern as vs. the Western Bigfoot and should test out as more human overall. The buzz is also that the suspected "Dogman" does not match the rest. I know nothing about the test results of any of this other than what has previousl been acknowledged publically. I have heard and I am pretty sure the Sierra Kills DNA does not match the Olympic hair DNA. The word I have from prior tests is that the Western Sasquatch DNA falls into the same larger category as the modern apes and humans but does not match any of them specifically, and it does not match the "Yeti" or Orang Pendek" hair DNA which is more specifically like orangutan DNA [and so far has not been shown to be a different species from the orangutan]. The Eastern Bigfoot samples always fall into the same general range of almost-human as the Neanderthal DNA also falls into generally. This was my understanding on the matter from before any mention of the Erickson Project. I am still as interested as anyone else to see the results of the study, only in my case I had independantly already heard of other Bigfoot DNA test results from beforehand.

A Conversation With Justin Smeja: I Killed Bigfoot [Free Documentary]

A Conversation With Justin Smeja: I Killed Bigfoot [Free Documentary]

From Bigfoot Evidence. If it's a Free Documentary, It's worth re-posting.

Monday, July 16, 2012

div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Last June, it was reported that a bear hunter in Northern California shot and killed two Bigfoots. One Bigfoot he shot was an adult and the other one was a juvenile that died in the his arms after being shot. According to the story, the hunter said the Bigfoots appeared sometimes on two legs and sometimes on four legs. They got aggressive with him and moved very close to him. At one point, one got on a ledge above him and seemed to be threatening him. He shot it out of fear it was going to attack him.
For a period of time no one knew if the story was true, but then Derek Randles of the Olympic Project released an official statement correcting some of the "misinformation" circulating the Bigfoot community. That official statement from Randles set the stage for what is now called the "Sierra Kills".

Justin Smeja, a hunter from Sacramento, CA was out bear hunting near Gold Lake with his friend (the driver) back in October 2010. This is his story:

Selected Replies
  1. For what it's worth, the text accompanying this entry (he shot in self-defense, they ran on all fours) is incorrect. IF this actually happened, he clearly states he shot from a distance at a non-hostile target. The "creature" ran on all fours because it had been wounded.
  2. Smeja is nothing but a poacher and an opportunistic pot grower in an economically depressed part of California. He has nothing to lose, in terms of a good reputation in his community, so there's no impetus for him to not tell bullshit tales like this one.

He's a redneck bullshitter who eventually told a story that pushed the same kind of emotional buttons that the Georgia hoaxers pushed. He saw how his bullshit story attracted some attention, and brought him some money, so he kept pushing that button and he kept refining his story.

He made up the whole story. The incident did not happen.
...............

the bigfoot steak actualy looks kinda like the hair of hovey's pic. i want to hear his friends side and want to have ro's live to be able to drink and interview is my dream lol
4.
Thanks for the interview and asking great questions. I am on the fence with whether he is telling the truth or him lying to make money. Polygraph and DNA results will tip the scales. My only question is what of the other guy who was with Justin? Where is he? And what is his side of the story?
--As to the last question the other fella has been interviewed and has made a statement. It has been printed on this blog in an earlier entry. And as to the DNA results, I have been in not exactly close but friendly communication with Melba Ketcham and her secretary Sally Ramey almost the whole time this incident has been in the news and  both the samples and the DNA results arising from it are all too real.
Best Wishes, Dale D.

Fox Flinginpoopen he sounds like a jerk that would shoot anything that moves, has no respect for life at all. if i shot a bigfoot, even if it was tryna kill my little ass, i would still feel guilty for the rest of my life 4 hours ago · Like · 2.

Mike Fonte I dont think i believe the guy at all 4 hours ago via mobile · Like.

Steve Alcorn SasquatchScoop ‎Keith Miller, exactly! I don't hunt but know many hunters, all of them have told me that the wont shoot unless they are certain. They even count the points on the deer to make sure it's legal. There are some bad hunters out there but even they wont shoot unless they know what they are shooting. If your buddy is screaming don't shoot because it might be a guy in a suit you sure as hell aint gonna shoot, if you do you deserve a special place in hell. Tim Stover TcsjrBigfoot, can tell you better than any one what goes through your mind when in a circumstance like this, he didn't shoot. Many hunters say they couldn't shoot even if they wanted too because it looked too human. Smeja is either a liar or one of the most dispicable human beings around. My opinion. 4 hours ago · Like · 1.

Fox Flinginpoopen well from wut he said his friend was saying, it didnt look like a threat to him. he was saying dont shoot 2 hours ago · Like.

Tim Mitchell exactly that is why i would want to talk to him. he knew it wasnt a threat and had no need to be shot 2 hours ago · Like.

Steve Alcorn SasquatchScoop ‎Tim Mitchell, The adult was alegedly shot from the truck so no real threat there, as far as the juvenile he didn't really say why he felt threatened. I am currently reading the entire thread on the taxidermy forum that Smeja originaly posted to, it is 57 pages and I am on page 23. 32 minutes ago · Like.

Tim Mitchell well let me know when you are done with it. i dont know if you caught joe rogans podcast with bobo last night but they talked about it in the beginning 30 minutes ago · Like.

Steve Alcorn SasquatchScoop Yep, I listened to it today. Bobo dissapoints me with his support of Smeja and Ketchum, other than that it was good. 24 minutes ago · Like.

Tim Mitchell i was kinda surprised that he was out with meldrum looking for the bodies. still i want to find his friend and talk to him. he is the missing link to the story since they have no body 21 minutes ago · Like.

Steve Alcorn SasquatchScoop Funny, Smeja never posted in that original thread that he killed a Bigfoot, he described it as a funny looking bear, then no mention of a juvenile until another person brought it up a couple weeks later. Apparently he spoke to another guy on the phone and told him the story, a couple weeks later the guy posted what Smeja told him. Smeja posted that he wished the guy would not have done that. 19 minutes ago · Like.

Tim Mitchell hmm for all we know maybe they just paid his dumbass to take the rap for what someone else might have did and that's why he couldnt find the bodies. one more question how the hell did he find the steak and no bone attached to it? 17 minutes ago · Like.

Steve Alcorn SasquatchScoop I dont know Tim it's all just an odd story. 16 minutes ago · Like.
