Bigfoot and the Cherokee Hill

A journey into sacred lands where the creature has been known for generations

Kentucky Bigfoot
According to one witness, this is what the Hebbardsville creatures look like. Described as averaging 8 feet tall, 400 lbs. with black skin and long arms that hang below the knees which they use in order to run swiftly. Flat, bearded face with receding chin-line, broad nose, thin lips and dark brown eyes beneath a prominent brow ridge. Covered in short hair with longer fringes about the beard, back of head and genital areas. Low forehead with hair “like a man’s combed straight back” (sketch by B.M.Nunnelly, 2006).

Bart Nunnelly is convinced that Bigfoot exists, and may even be thriving in the many remote wilderness areas of North America. He has good reason to think so. As co-owner and co-creator of Kentucky Bigfoot (with fellow Bigfoot researcher Charlie Raymond), Bart devotes a great deal of his time researching sightings and examining evidence of these remarkable forest giants in the Bluegrass State. And the evidence he’s gathered is both fascinating and compelling. Bart recently met with an eyewitness to these creatures, a Cherokee elder who took Bart on a journey into the heart of Bigfoot territory and provided detailed information about the giant from his own experiences as well as the age-old traditions of the Cherokee people, who know these creatures well. This is Bart's story....
(Note: The names of the locations in this report have been intentionally altered for the privacy of those involved.)
After learning from a local paranormal investigator friend of mine about an old Cherokee fellow who also claimed to be a Hebbardsville, Kentucky Bigfoot witness, a phone interview was arranged and conducted in November, 2006. The information proved correct. Not only did the witness describe repeated (often at will) sightings of groups of these hairy creatures since his childhood, he also claimed to be in possession of what he was convinced was an actual tooth, which he described as a canine, from one of these creatures. Moreover, he could describe, in great detail, the physiological features, general attitudes and predictable behavior of these mysterious “hillbillies” known to the rest of the world as Bigfoot.
The alleged Bigfoot tooth which resembles a human canine, only much larger. Throughout the 19th and early parts of the 20th centuries many many sources cite the discovery of giant human-like skeletal remains in the Bluegrass state, the vast majority having been found buried in Native American Indian burial grounds or mounds. The witness’ mother related to him before her death that she had personally witnessed the excavation of one such grave In Beals, Ky., between Spottsville and Reed, back in the 1920’s. It was discovered during the process of building a bridge over a large creek. The bones were measured and found to be nearly 12 ft. tall! The giants remains passed into private ownership and their whereabouts went unrecorded, (photo by B.M.Nunnelly, 2006).
Kentucky Bigfoot Sighting Location

Location in Hebbardsville, where witnesses reportedly regularly observed Bigfoot creatures eating roots and grass. This creek, which runs along the Green River, was a primary route of travel for the creatures according to witnesses, (photo by B.M.Nunnelly, 2006).

After several more phone interviews a meeting was arranged and, under the promise of strict anonymity, M.F. (not his real initials) agreed to allow me to photograph the alleged Bigfoot canine for possible identification. I arrived on the 17th of Dec., 2006. M. F. Lived only a short drive from the Hebbardsville area, only a twenty minute drive from my own doorstep. I found the gentleman to be pleasant, friendly, down to earth and of obvious intelligence. He immediately pulled the tooth out of his pocket. It did resemble a human canine, or eye, tooth, only about three times as large. I examined it and noted the obvious authenticity and great antiquity of the object, taking several photographs. It was complete with root system still attached. He would allow no DNA testing, he had told me during one of our phone conversations, because to do this would mean that at least a partial destruction of the tooth would occur. Nor would he allow it to depart his possession in any way. As a matter of fact, he didn’t really care at all to try and prove the existence of these things to anyone. They had always been a fact of life to his own people. Evidence of his Cherokee heritage was strewn about his yard, flower beds and doorsteps, and worn proudly around his neck. They were the ‘Old People of the Forest’, he told me, and their reality caused no controversy except to the whites. It would be amusing if not for the fact that , in their ignorance, the logging and mining of the white man was causing the rapid desecration and destruction of the Bigfoot’s habitat. Land considered sacred by the Indians since the beginning of history. There was daylight left. He asked me if I cared to take a ride. M. F.’s story was an interesting one. He had first been exposed to the creatures while growing up in the Spottsville, Reed areas, although at least two earlier generations of his family had their own tales of sightings and strange happenings. He remembered his great grandfather recounting how he had run outside one night after he’d heard some kind of commotion to see one of the old people carrying off two of his full grown sows, one under each arm like they were piglets. It swiftly made its escape even though the pigs weighed about 200 lbs. each! Around the time of the “Spottsville Monster” events his brother was finding strangely mutilated dead cattle. He had lost six head that year. Literally. All six carcasses were found with their heads torn off and missing. They only found one head, he claimed, and it was stripped to the bone and missing the lower mandible. None of the other meat on the carcasses was consumed. When the family moved across the Green River to Hebbardsville the sightings continued. In fact, he claimed that from the late 1960’s until the early to mid 70’s hardly any weekend went by when he and a car load of friends didn’t park near the intersection of Ash Flats and Old Bell roads and observe groups of these creatures, ranging in number from four individuals up to as many as fifteen or better, engaged in the act of eating bitter roots and grass. Countless sightings, he claimed, by dozens of different individuals. “Were they hairy Indians?” I asked. No, he said. They were not Indians of any type. They had black skin and an average size of eight to ten feet tall, although he had seen one awhile back that was at least a twelve footer. Their eyes were a dark brown color with no visible whites or irises. They were bearded, had thin lips, a weak chin and a flat, wide nose like individuals of African descent. They had normal looking hands of a large size with pale colored palms, but their feet had an opposing toe sticking out at an angle away from the other four toes, like an ape’s or chimp’s. They had extremely long arms which hung down past their knees and could run quadrupedally 35 to 40 mph. The females also possessed beards, though shorter than the males. They were of more stocky build, had furry breasts and carried their young beneath them clinging to their bellies. He described the males as being covered with short, straight, usually dark hair, with longer areas of about six inches at the beard, backs of the head and genital areas. “Pull over here”. He said as we approached a medium sized muddy creek at the Old Bell, Ash Flats location. I pulled over and we got out. This was the location, he told me, that he and scores of friends had witnessed these creatures feeding countless times. They didn’t seem to mind being watched, he said. Unless someone got out of the car. Then they would all rush into the creek and be gone in an instant. They traveled the creeks, he claimed. The water would wash away the tracks and they were excellent swimmers if the water was up. After photographing the location I asked him if he could take me to where he found the tooth. He would take me there, he replied, if I promised never to disclose the location. It was a sacred place, he explained. A burial place of the Cherokee people and home to other powerful legendary beings as well as the old people. I agreed and we got back into my four wheel drive. We traveled a short distance from the Pleasant Hill area and stopped. “Follow me…” he said, and started up a thickly forested ridge. Although he was nearly 60 years old he ascended the steep terrain as nimbly as a jack rabbit and, after a short but vigorous trek, we crested another large hill and stopped. “Look freely.” he said. “Take pictures, but nothing else”. I looked around. We stood at the rim of a forested ridge which wound around the area like a dark circle, forming an impressive natural amphitheater. The bottom of the ‘bowl’ formation was mostly clear and somehow comfortable looking even now. All around me were graves, stacked in layers. Some ancient beyond reckoning. Many were marked with stones onto which Cherokee pictographs and letters were carved. I had hunted Indian artifacts nearly all my life but had never seen a single stone in Henderson county bearing intact Native American images or writing. Now I was surrounded by them. “This place is called “The Great Hill” by my people.” The Great Hill. Here was buried the bodies of the famous Cherokee chieftain, Double Head, his daughter, Corn Blossom and countless others. I snapped pictures one after another while the sunlight faded much too swiftly. Daniel Boone, pioneer hero of old, had written of this place. Twice he was held captive here and twice he was freed or escaped. Two heavily weathered stones still bore his name and short messages, carved there by Boone’s own hand during his captivity. Still other stones were carven with images of corn stalks, deer and sun. Three stones contained the likenesses of strange faces. No one knew who most of the graves belonged to. Great chiefs of antiquity whose names were lost forever. Stone circles were present. Raking back the dead leaves revealed a wealth of flint artifacts still lying where their makers had placed them generations ago. During heavy rains some of the graves would wash out, M. F. told me. He had needed to re-inter some of the bones on occasion. He had found the tooth several years ago here, at the foot of the hill, washed up by the rushing water. No other creature of this area had teeth like it, he felt sure. With his help I was able to sketch a facial study of these particular humanoid’s features for all to view. I would like to express my gratitude to this man for agreeing to speak with me, sharing some secrets and showing
me such interesting, and historically significant locations. Locations unlike any other that I have ever personally witnessed.

The “Hebbardsville Hillbillies” – Investigated by B. M. Nunnelly on 12-19-06On Sunday, Dec. 17th, 2006 I headed out to investigate rumors that large, hirsute, bipedal humanoids were still being seen in Hebbardsville, Ky. Henderson County. In the early winter of 2004 witnesses in a parked vehicle at a place called Negro Hill, Pleasant Valley Rd. reportedly observed two large, hairy, manlike creatures in a field below in the act of pulling up and eating the roots of old corn stalks. One was a dark brown color, they claimed, while the other appeared to have white hair. Though shaken, they returned the next day to find trace evidence in the form of uprooted stalks and prints. The area, just across the Green River from Reed and Spottsville Ky., has a long history of hairy monster sightings and the creature was dubbed the ‘Hebbardsville Hillbilly’ by the local press and residents of Hebbardsville. It was also claimed that a strange bed, made of grass and Switch Cane plants, was discovered in an old, abandoned dwelling in the woods at the end of Pleasant Hill Rd. I planned to visit said locations to have a look around and take pictures and, with the help of my guide, Greg Tackett, family friend and one time Hebbardsville resident, was able to arrive at Pleasant Hill Rd. in an expeditious manner. He knew both the area and the story well, he claimed, and promised to lead me to the exact locations in question with no trouble at all. Moreover, I had been given the contact info by a mutual friend of another Hebbardsville Bigfoot witness who had made some startling claims to me regarding Bigfoot in the area and had scheduled an interview with him for later that afternoon. I had visited the area the previous day to reconnoiter, parking at the old church on Negro Hill and looking down at the many fields, creeks, wind-breaks and forests of the Green River bottomlands. The entire area, known as the ‘county ditch’ as it takes on all the water that the highlands shed, is littered with Indian artifacts and ancient burial mounds, mute testimony to the two Native American tribes that once called this place home; the peaceful Cherokee and the war hungry Shawnee just across the river. The Shawnee, I’m told, would often steal across the river in their canoes under cover of darkness, to raid the Cherokee, stealing their women and children and murdering the warriors. The particularly violent history of much of Western Kentucky is startling, and it is easy to see how such a place, once called ‘the dark and bloody ground’, could give birth to many dark legends which still cause locals to shudder even now. We would have to take the long way around, Greg informed me, as the woods where the old house was located at the far end of Negro Hill was owned by a local logging/mining co. and posted. We planned to come in from the bottom field where the creatures were initially sighted and work our way eastward to the old home site, which was located on Book Lane, a part of what is known locally as the “Ash Flats’. We found the lane under 2 ft. of mud and water and realized that the only way to continue was on foot. Greg, however, was undaunted and as eager to carry on as I was and I am very grateful for his stern resolve to make good on a promise that he had made to me months earlier. After a few minutes trek we were in the field below the wooded hill and I was able to take photos of the old church from below. We walked for another hour before we made it to the house site, but, unfortunately, it was no longer there. Evidently the logging co. had torn it down and bull-dozed the entire area several months before, turning the once verdant forests into nothing more than rolling grassland, a fate that still awaits much of the Hebbardsville river bottoms. My only regret was that I had arrived too late to investigate and photograph the alleged Bigfoot nesting place.

Bart Nunnelly is the author of Mysterious Kentucky, scheduled for publication in Summer 2007.

This was a story that was posted in my yahoo group Frontiers of Zoology and on the site Cryptomundo at about the same time in December of 2006 or 2007. There was some discussion about the tooth at the Cryptomundo site including the additional information that the tooth was a premolar and not a canine: our discussion went a little further and specified that the tooth had characteristic NEANDERTHAL traits and was not only "a big Indian's tooth"
Neanderthal teeth often show the feature called Taurodontism, in which the pulp cavity of the tooth is expanded and as a result the root tends more and more to form a tube shape. Below are asome unwarn Neanderthal teeth and the Hebbardsville tooth on the right, showing the expanded pulp cavity, and the line drawing under that illustrates the degree to which the Taurodont trait can be expressed in different individuals.

The skull of the Hebbardsville Hillbilly once again has more points in common with the Neanderthals than with the more usual types of modern humans. The size and the shape of the skull in the Hebbardsville Hillbilly also look to be a fair match for the Gardar skull in Greenland.
The tracks are once again typical Eastern Bigfoot tracks and are Neanderthal-like but larger, Similar tracks are found in Tennessee and the other adjoining states, up to Pennsylvania and including also Georgia and the Carolinas.
Alabama track in winter snow, in the mountains, and adjoining the mountains of Kentucky and Tennessee. This track has a definite heel-skid making the heel of the track appear more pointed and elongated

Kentucky Cryptids

http://kentuckycryptids.blogspot.com/2010/10/pope-lick-monster.html

The Pope Lick Monster

Norfolk Southern Railway trestle, Louisville, KY

It’s not as likely that you’ve ever seen or heard about this particular cryptid, either because there aren’t any cases on file about the Pope Lick Monster (named after the Pope Lick Creek below the Pope Lick Train Trestle), or because sightings of this creature began in late 1940s to early 1950s and have faded since then. All the same, the Pope Lick Monster is an interesting character: a human-goat hybrid appearing to have the body build like a man with fur covering the legs, translucent skin, and a hooked nose like a goat. Also, the goat-man has short, sharp horns protruding from the forehead, situated by long, greasy hair. It’s said he mimics voices of a loved one asking for help on the train trestle at night. The victim will be so drawn to the voice, they’ll barely notice the oncoming train and will either be ran over or plunge the 100 foot drop off of the bridge.
The only known incidents involving the monster that I’ve heard of where: a group of Boy Scouts camping on a hillside near the trestle driven from their camp late at night by a creature that screamed and threw stones at them, but keep in mind this is also Bigfoot behavior. In 2000, a man at the age of 19 died from falling off the trestle – which could have had something to do with the Pope Lick Monster.

One woman recalls in her youth hearing stories about the Pope Lick Monster: “It was part of a senior tradition,” Mary Ruckriegel, wife of Jeffersontown Mayor Daniel Ruckriegel. “They would go out there to see if they could see it; it was a sign of bravery,” she added. “The boys would take the girls out there to try to scare them. It was something really scary.” (Kendall, 2001.)
And still, the origin of the Pope Lick Monster has never been confirmed. There are several views that the monster was a reincarnated form of a farmer who sacrificed goats in exchange for satanic powers. Others have said that the monster was a circus ‘freak’ out for revenge to the people who were cruel to him, the story here as follows: “In the late 1800s there were rumors of a wild animal roaming the Canadian wilderness. Locals called it The Pope Lick Monster. Stories about the creature caught the attention of a circus owner by the name of Silus Garner. He offered a generous reward to anyone who could capture the mysterious monster. Finally someone tracked the creature down, captured it and claimed the reward. Garner began to exhibit the Goat Monster in his circus freak show. He travelled by train from town to town and the monster was one of his star attractions. But Garner mistreated the monster and it grew to hate its captor and all other humans. One fateful night, as the travelling circus was bound for Louisville, lightning struck the train tracks, derailing the train and causing a fatal accident. All the passengers aboard the train were killed, all except for one – the Pope Lick Monster” (“Pope Lick”.)

Local police are constantly trying to keep teenagers from climbing up to the dangerous heights of the trestle, and have fenced off certain portions from the general public to try and prevent future death/injury, especially since trains go over this bridge many times on a daily basis, and it’s hard to (safely) escape the bridge from an oncoming train. So, it’s important for police officials to monitor the area (Pope Lick Monster, 2010.)

[-In this case again I think the "Satyr" or goatman is a Wendigo wearing an animal skin as a disguise, keeping the animal's horns and goatlike legs intact in the hide The hide could well be a deerskin unrecognised. I have other reports seeming to describe the same thing from New Jersey and other parts of the US and Canada.-DD]
Monsterquest photo for an Ohio "Grassman" dwelling covered by a rofing of grass or shrubs. Such structures are also reported in Indiana, Kentucky and the surrounding states. I have ibnspected some such structures in Indiana that are about twenty feet in diameter with a scooped-out floor area.)
In the case of Kentucky also, one of the purported "Bigfoot" photos seems to me to be instead one of the clearer representations of a Skunk Ape (as they are called in Florida) Not only are the face and head a close match for an orangutan, the long furry arms as indicated have a distinctly orangutan like look to them
Reconstructed-representation of a "Skunk Ape", also similar to a young orangutan. This looks like it is redrawn off of a Native mask.

A Vark Hond, or a Namibian Hogzilla?

Hybrid Dog Headed Pig Terrorizes Africa

NAMIBIA -- Residents in northern Namibia, on the southwest coast of Africa, have reported being terrorized by a bizarre dog-pig hybrid creature.
The animal is said to be mostly white and unlike anything the villagers have ever seen, with a doglike head and the broad, round, nearly hairless back and shoulders of a giant pig.
The beast was spotted chasing and attacking dogs, goats and other domestic animals in this arid region not far from the Kalahari desert.
As often happens when rumors of monsters spread in rural areas around the world, some locals have taken extra safety precautions, such as traveling in groups and arming themselves with weapons.
In 1995 and 1996, some Puerto Ricans armed themselves against the vampire beast el chupacabra; last year, Malaysian residents patrolled the streets searching for the mysterious orang minyak, or "oily man" creature that had recently terrorized them.
What could this monster be? One Namibian official, regional councilor Andreas Mundjindi, was quoted in Informante newspaper as saying, "This is an alien animal that the people have not seen before. We don't have a forest here, only bushes. So, this must be black magic at play."

Some people in the area trace the beast to one old man rumored to be a warlock or witch doctor, suggesting it's his pet (or, what witch-hunters hundreds of years ago would have called a "familiar").
The assumption that the beast has magical origins is not surprising. A 2010 Gallup poll found belief in magic widespread throughout sub-Saharan Africa, with more than half of respondents saying they personally believe in witchcraft and sorcery.
This is not the first time that unusual animals have been spotted in rural areas of Namibia; several other monsters have been reported over the years, including in July 2009, when unknown creatures reportedly sucked the blood out of livestock, including nearly two dozen goats.
Though no one saw the monsters, they were said to have left footprints similar to those of a dog, but much larger. Police followed the footprints, but they mysteriously stopped in an open field, as if the creature suddenly took flight or vanished.
At that time, locals were also convinced that the strange beast was the product of black magic - going so far as to accuse an old man and his sister of conjuring the creature.
It's not clear whether locals believe that the current dog-headed, pig-bodied animal is the same mystery creature that terrorized the region three years ago.
Whether the reports are real or rumor, hopefully belief in these creatures won't be used as an excuse for mob attacks on elderly men and women suspected of witchcraft.

--In this case it seems quite obvious to me that what we have is a quite ordinary feral hog with mixed pig-boar characteristics, a round body short on hair that looks like a domesticated pig and a long-snouted head with large fangs like a wild boar's head that reminds local people of a dog's head. Please bear in mind most of the locals would only have SEEN domesticated swine and the sight of a wild boar's head would probably come as a shock to most of them.

At left, Wild boar cross with "Doglike" fangs: at right, wild boar cross with thinner hair on body.

And the 2009 "Apparition" (if it should be called such) was once again a case of feral dogs at work and leaving recognizable dog tracks. Calling it a "Chupacabras attack" would be as wrong as any other time such feral dog attacks would be called "Chupacabras", but at least it would be consistent.

Best Wishes, Dale D.

Update on Tyler Stone's Freshwater Monkey Theory

Tyler Stone has an update on the Freshwater Monkey theory: He thinks the Scrape Ore Lizardman is one (But he also adds there is probably a large lizard that runs bipedally involved)

In the meantime, Tyler and I have been discussing the Honey Island Swamp Monster and I have updated that entry, including the information about how the tracks were faked:

Tusked Bunyips and Southern Walruses

There is a subcategory of Bunyip sightings that has been stated all along and it never seems anybody ever notices the implications: some Bunyips are consistently describred as having long ivory tusks like a walrus. The depiction at left is from Deviant Art is impressive but it basically is depicting one of these walrus-creatures and including the (unattested) tail. As I point out below, even the flippers shown are about equivalent of walrus flippers.
Sometimes it seems that such sightings are ascribed to major geographic confusion, but it has been mooted about for most of the twentieth century that there might be a Southern-hemisphere equivalent to the arctic Walrus, an ecological replacement derived from the sealions that perhaps evolved similar tusks in parallel to the ones we were more familiar with. The discussion may not have moved very far outside of Southern Australia, Tasmania, and Nrew Zealand
Folklorists at least have recognised the situation was unusual, and Thor Heyerdahl quotes the Maori tradition of the Marakai-Hau as being evidence of cultural contact between Polynesians and NW Coastal Amerinds. However, that soultion does not account for such reports and representations of walrus-tusked Bunyips as we see here.(once again, the version at left includes the traditional but actually unreported tail)
There is a residuum of reports found in In The Wake of the Sea Serpents which sound rather like tuskless walruses reported in Southern waters: off South Africa they are sometimes called "Waterhorses" (Merhorses) and some have been reported by Japanese boats sailing the Anatarctic Ocean, but  the reports were ignored because, as they were told, they could not have seen Anatarctic walruses because such things do not exist. However in many of these cases not only do the descriptions of the tusks match, sometimes as in these Bunyip cases, the shape of the flippers as indicated do match walrus' flippers.
Walrus

Curiously, early Spanish
explorers also attributed walruses
to Patagonia, once again with the tail (Explorers in Northern waters also used to attribute an extended tail onto the more familiar walruses-which we know today do NOT have the tails)

"Frogfoot" in the Midwest

http://kentuckycryptids.blogspot.com/2010/10/lizard-man.html
[This was a matter that was going on over a large portion of the Midwest generally at the time and over the next couple of decades, only the national press was not aware of the fact and witnesses in the different states were not aware there were other witnesses in other states that were reporting the same thing. I was one of the ones personally involved in investigations at the time. At the time I remember distinctly that Reptoids were not spoken of in the UFO or Fortean communities and I was about the only one I knew of that even talked about such things as Reptoids in the mid-1970s.-DD]

The Lizard Man

Stephensport, Breckenridge County
In the early fall of 1966, Joe, a 9 year old boy at the time, woke up to a loud thrashing noise outside of his bedroom window at approximately 1:00am. He went to his window to peak outside, but there was nothing in view. Naturally, Joe went to his living room to investigate the sound that continued to bang against his house. When he came to the living room, he pulled back the curtains of the front door window – to his surprise, he was staring at a 5’6” to 6’ tall man of amphibious characteristics, with dark brown scales covering its entire body. The creature had webbed feet and hands, and little dark eyes. Joe recollects that the brief moment he seen the creature’s face, it appeared to have “hard,” huge rows of gills that flared out on both sides of its face, resembling that of a lizard. Joe doesn’t remember the creature having a nose, lips, muscles, or genitals, but there was a ridge-like feature starting from its forehead and running back over the top of its head.
After the brief moment Joe peered at the creature through the window, it quickly ran for the creek next to Joe’s house. Joe, yet shocked, ran to an adjacent window to catch a glimpse of it as it ran away on two legs towards a creek about 75 yards from his house.
Charlie Raymond (Investigator) and Barton Nunnelly (Sketch artist) provided a follow-up investigation of Joe’s sighting of the Lizard Man in 2006 (making Joe 49 years old at the time.) It was noted that Joe is also married, with two children in college. Joe continually stressed to Raymond and Nunnelly that the creature was “amphibious looking,” although it ran/stood on two feet. He stated that there would be no way someone would have dressed up in a costume like that considering to this day he couldn’t imagine someone owning such a life-like costume, especially 40 years ago in Breckenridge County.
Later sightings of the Lizard Man in Kentucky grew during the 70s (but have died out since) in Louisville – which makes sense, considering Louisville and Breckenridge County are close in region...
Unfortunately, these stories are the latest sightings of the Lizard Man in Kentucky. There haven’t been (to my knowledge) any sightings during the 21st century. [That could be because reports generally have a latency period before they are "Discovered" and circulated-DD]

The River Demon:

The Shawnee Indians inhabited the area surrounding what is now known as the Little Miami River. There tribe had a legend about The Shawnahooc which, roughly translated means The River Demon. As the legend goes a small group of Shawnee Indians on a hunt stumbled upon a fairly large reptilian on the banks of the river. The Indians attempted move in closer. However, upon doing so, the creature took notice of them, stood up on its hind legs, and retreated back into the river. The Shawnee people became extremely frightened upon hearing this. Believing that this creature was a demon they sent their greatest warriors to vanquish the demon or drive it from the river. The Shawnee Indians never again caught site of the creature and, according to their myths, it is believed that after seeing the warriors approach it fled.

Mamnegishi:

The Cree Indians of Eastern Canada told myths about creatures referred to as Mamnegishi. In their myths they describe the Mamnegishi as small bipedal creatures having: six fingers on each hand, a disproportionately large head, no nose, elongated limbs, no hair, and large eyes. The Cree Indians described the Mamnegishi as Mischievous creatures that took great pleasure in playing tricks on humans. The Cree Indians tell that the Mamnegishi would paint Pictographs on the Rock’s near the Rapids where they were said to have lived.

The Inzignanin:

The Indians of South Carolina that inhabited the Chicora- an area told legends of The Inzignanin, fish like humanoids that were five feet in height, covered in scales, and had fairly inflexible tails approximately 18 inches long. These Fish-men were believed to consume only raw fish and are said to have died out when the areas fish population depleted.
Wayne, New Jersey:

In November of the year 1974 a motorist on his way to White Meadow Lake in Wayne New Jersey reported seeing a large green humanoid with large"frog-like" eyes and a wide lipless mouth cross the road in front of his vehicle.

(Reptilian's) ET Alien's Are Real And True. Video
The "Frogfoot" creature as reported in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio in the 1970s especially. The creatures were not usually seen, but they commonly left big tracks like a frogman's flippers in the beds of creeks and rivers, and on sandbars, typically emerging from and going back into the water. I investigated such a trackway together with my two younger brothers in the White River (Indiana) but my youngest brother was later known to pull "Bigfoot" hoaxes and so I considered the matter as most likely a hoax or at least highly suispicious.
This is a diiagram showing how the usual carnivorous dinosaurs walked up on their toes but some of them could walk flat-footed. The flat-footed version is very close to the reported Reptoid tracks worldwide.

Three-Toed "Swamp Monster" footprint. A great many "Three-toed" tracks were hoaxed by using an alligator's foot strapped under the soles of each of yor boots, but Alligators have an extra toe off to the side which shows up and gives it all away.

Three-toed "Reptoid" track intact in clayey matrix. Such tracks are generally between one foot and two feet long, and most of them are not really all that large when compared to Bigfoot tracks. The bulk of such tracks in the USA are CALLED Bigfoot, however.

Ohio Creature Footprints

by on Jan.26, 2011, under What's Really Going On

9" to 10" footprints with three claws. Note the apparent blood droplets at top left. Click images to see full size.
“I am not used to seeing the kind of tracks in my back yard like the samples I’m attaching here. Any ideas? Looks BIG. Gulp.”
So read the email I received last week from my close friend S. with 4 photos attached (the one above was also a Coast to Coast AM Photo of the Day on 1/27/11). He lives in Franklin County, Ohio near Columbus, works in a highly visible profession and is too shy to post these images himself — but he’s also alarmed by the footprints he and his wife found in their back yard last week after the last big snowfall. Knowing of my keen interest in the ridiculous-yet-hard-to-explain, he sent them to me.
He’s been perusing BFRO’s site for sasquatch sightings in his area looking to make some kind of sense of this, but to no avail.
“The right track has blood on it — the right foot seems to indicate a foot injury,” his email continued. “We are kinda freaking out. We have spent hours combing through wild animal track books, trying to isolate and identify the tracks, hoping to come up with an explanation. WHOA. Freaking.
S.”
He says the tracks crossed through his yard and stopped at a large tree. Sadly there was no shivering juvenile squatch hiding in the tree when he looked up — but then where did it go? Did it fly away? Jersey devil? Mothman? My two cents — these aren’t sasquatch, Jersey devil or mothman prints; they’re clearly dogman prints. Perhaps it leapt from the tree onto another tree or onto his roof (he didn’t think to look there for more prints) and was gone. (UPDATE 1/27/11: I just searched and found this regarding Ohio’s “Loveland creature,” a reptilian spotted in 1955 and 1972, so I’m switching my opinion from dogman to lizardman.)
They’re real. It’s not a hoax. Your theory? He’s open to your explanations.

Apparent blood droplets, top left, spattered all along right foot path.

Below, a purported photograph of a "Lizard-Man" from Kansas and I beleve there is supposed to be a video associated with this sighting also.

REPTILIAN-ALIEN CASE FILES VIDEO -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CASE FILE #1: From: "The Reptilians: Humanity's Historical Link to the Serpent Race" by Joe Lewels, Ph.D.: "John Carpenter has kept close track of the abduction phenomenon. He is the director of abduction research for the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), one of the largest and most credible organizations dedicated to the scientific study of UFOs and abductions. Carpenter holds a master's degree in social work and is a highly qualified hypnotherapist who works as a psychiatric social worker in Springfield, Missouri. Since the late 1980s, he has worked with more than 100 abductees and compiled information on hundreds of others. In addition, he is in contact with other researchers in the field. He has been involved in 10 cases where experiencers have described reptilian entities and he is aware of researchers in other parts of the country with similar cases. Abductees often have distinct clawlike cuts and bruises on their bodies after their apparent abductions. "Carpenter summarized what he knows of these beings in his regular column, 'Abduction Notes,' MUFON UFO Journal, April 1993:'Typically, these reptilian creatures are reported to be about six to seven feet tall, upright, with lizardlike scales, greenish to brownish in color with clawlike, four-fingered webbed hands....Their faces are said to be a cross between a human and a snake, with a central ridge coming down from the top of the head to the snout. Adding to their serpentlike appearance are their eyes which have vertical slits in their pupils and golden irises." Perhaps the most frightening and most controversial part of these stories are claims that the creatures occasionally are reported to have sex with abductees.'"

CASE FILE #2: From: 'OUR HAUNTED PLANET', by John A. Keel (1968. Fawcett Publications., Greenwich, Conn.): "...The parahuman Serpent People of the past are still among us. They were probably worshipped by the builders of Stonehenge and the forgotten ridge-making cultures of South America. "...In some parts of the world the Serpent People successfully posed as gods and imitated the techniques of the superintelligence. This led to the formation of pagan religions centered around human sacrifices. The conflict, so far as man himself was concerned, became one of religions and races. Whole civilizations based upon the worship of these false gods rose and fell in Asia, Africa, and South America. The battleground had been chosen, and the mode of conflict had been decided upon. "The human race would supply the pawns. The mode of control was complicated as usual. Human beings were largely free of direct control. Each individual HAD TO CONSCIOUSLY COMMIT HIMSELF TO ONE OF THE OPPOSING FORCES... "The main battle was for what was to become known as the human soul. "Once an individual had committed himself, he opened a door so that an indefinable something could actually enter his body and exercise some control over his subconscious mind. "...the Serpent People or Omega Group, attacked man in various ways, trying to rid the planet of him. But the superintelligence was still able to look over man... God worked out new ways of communication and control, always in conflict with the Serpent People."

CASE FILE #3: From: 'CURIOUS ENCOUNTERS', by Loren Coleman (Faber & Faber., Boston, Mass. 1985) pp. 70-76: "One classic Bigfoot story, (discussed in some detail in MYSTERIOUS AMERICA) namely, the Wetzel/Riverside, California sighting on 8 November 1958, CLEARLY FITS THE REPTILIAN MODE better than the anthropoid one. Wetzel described, as you may recall, the fluorescent-eyed 'thing' as having a protuberant mouth and a body COVERED WITH SCALES, looking like leaves. Wetzel's 'thing' emerged from the Santa Ana River underbrush. "The connection to water is a strong theme in all of these accounts so it is not so surprising that the next puzzle comes from the lake monster file. Trekking up the West Coast, the following report concerns a monster that actually looks like it stepped out of the wardrobe room of the Black Lagoon movie. ...[snip]... "The Thetis monster account sounds similar to one from Saginaw, Michigan, occurring in 1937. A man-like monster climbed up a river bank, leaned against a tree, and then returned to the river. The fisherman who witnessed this appearance suffered a nervous breakdown. This Saginaw tale, the reports of clawed and three-toed prints from Wisconsin to Missouri, and other supposedly 'Bigfoot' or 'manimal' encounters perhaps should be reexamined in light of the REPTILIAN creatures from the Black Lagoon. "The big Deltox Swamp, Wisconsin flap, investigated by Ivan T. Sanderson in 1979, for example, has always been shelved with Bigfoot reports. But what is to be made of the tracks of the creature, like footprints of 'a good-sized man with swim fins.' "This trait is a more frequent characteristic in the so- called eastern Bigfoot reports than you might realize. For example, there's the case of the creature of Charles Mill Lake in Mansfield, Ohio. A green-eyed, seven-foot-tall, seemingly armless humanoid, seen late in March 1959 by Michael Lane, Wayne Armstrong, and Dennis Patterson, came out of the lake and left behind 'tracks that resembled the footgear worn by skin divers.' The thing was seen again in 1963 and described as 'luminous and green-eyed.' I examined the site of these encounters and can testify to the Charles Mill Lake's swampy affinities--certainly a good home for a Black Lagoon beast... "In 1973, during the summer, residents of New Jersey's Newton-Lafayette area described A GIANT, MAN-LIKE ALLIGATOR they had seen locally. Newspaper reporters wrote about an old Indian tale from the region that told of a giant, man-sized fish that could never be caught. In 1977, New York State Conservation Naturalist Alfred Hulstruck reported that the state's Southern Tier had 'a scaled, man-like creature (that) appears at dusk from the red, algae-ridden waters to forage among the fern and moss- covered uplands.' "The New York-New Jersey record, however, cannot compare with the overwhelming series of narratives issuing from one place in the United States, the Ohio River Valley. "Over twenty years ago, by digging into the back issues of the Louisville, Kentucky, COURIER-JOURNAL, I discovered one of those gems that has kept me pondering its meaning for two decades. The interesting little item was in the 24 October 1878 issue. A 'WIld Man of the Woods' was captured, supposedly, in Tennessee, and then placed on exhibit in Louisville. The creature was described as being six feet, five inches tall, and having eyes twice the normal size. His body was 'COVERED WITH SCALES.' This article now makes some sense. "And then almost a hundred years later, again near Louisville, there are more stories of REPTILIAN ENTITIES. In October 1975, near Milton, Kentucky, Clarence Cable reported a 'giant lizard' was roaming the forests near his junkyard. Author Peter Guttilla described the creature Cable surprised as 'about fifteen feet long, had a foot-long forked tongue, and big eyes that bulged something like a frog's. It was dull-white with black-and-white stripes across its body with quarter-size speckles over it.' "On-site field investigations by Mark A. Hall, however, indicated this 'giant lizard' RAN BIPEDALLY[in an obviously hoaxed example discussed earlier on this blog-DD], according to OTHER Trimble County, Kentucky witnesses. The Ohio River is Louisville's, Milton's, and Trimble county's northern boundary. "On 21 August 1955, near Evansville, Indiana, Mrs. Darwin Johnson was almost pulled forever into the depths of the Ohio River. In what seems to be a very close meeting with one of those creatures, Mrs. Johnson, of Godtown, Indiana, was swimming with her friend Mrs. Chris Lamble about fifteen feet from the shore when SUDDENLY SOMETHING GRABBED HER FROM UNDER THE SURFACE. It felt like the 'hand' had huge claws and 'furry' (or scaly?) palms. It came up from behind, grabbed her left leg, grabbed her knee, and pulled her under. She kicked and fought herself free. It pulled her under again. Although both women could not see the thing, they were screaming and yelling to scare it away. Finally, Mrs. Johnson lunged for Mrs. Lamble's inner tube, and the loud 'thump' apparently scared 'it' away, and 'it' released its grip. Back on shore, Mrs. Johnson received treatment for her scratches and marks on her leg. "Fortean investigator Terry Colvin passed on the information that Mrs. Johnson had a palm-print-shaped green stain below her knee that could not be removed, and it remained for several days. (Interestingly, Colvin learned the Johnsons were visited by an individual who identified himself as an Air Force colonel who took voluminous notes and warned them not to talk further about the incident. Of course, this sounds so similar to the 'Man-In- Black' encounter that is goes almost without saying.) "For anyone who has seen CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, the Ohio River encounter of Mrs. Darwin Johnson is already familiar, for her attack was foreshadowed in that movie... "1972... In March of that year on two separate occasions, two Ohio policemen saw what has become known as the 'Loveland Frogman.' Investigated by Ron Schaffner and Richard Mackey, these researchers interviewed the officers involved but have not published their names, instead using the fictitious names 'Williams' and 'Johnson.' "The first incident took place at 1:00 A.M. on 3 March 1972, on a clear, cold night. Officer Williams was on route to Loveland, via Riverside Road, when he thought he saw a dog beside the road. But when the 'thing' stood up, its eyes illuminated by the car lights, looked at him for an instant, turned, and leapt over the guardrail. Williams saw it go down an embankment into the Little Miami River, a mere fifteen or so miles from the Ohio River. He described the thing as weighing about sixty pounds, about three to four feet tall, having a textured leathery skin, AND A FACE LIKE A FROG OR LIZARD. Williams went on to the police station and returned with Officer Johnson to look for evidence of the creature. They turned up scrape-marks leading down the side of the small hill near the river. "On approximately 17 March 1972, Officer Johnson was driving outside of Loveland when he had a similar experience. Seeing an animal lying in the middle of the road, he stopped to remove what he thought was a dead critter. Instead, when the officer opened his squeaky car door, the animal got up into a crouched position like a football player. The creature hobbled to the guardrail and lifted its leg over, while constantly looking at Johnson. Perhaps it was the funny smirk on its face, but Johnson decided to shoot at it. He missed, he figured, since the thing didn't slow down. Johnson later told how he felt it was more upright than the way Williams described it. One area farmer told investigators he saw a large, FROG-LIKE OR LIZARD-LIKE CREATURE during the same month of the officers' sightings..."

CASE FILE #4: From: 'WORLD OF THE INCREDIBLE BUT TRUE', by Charles Berlitz (Fawcett Crest Books., N.Y.): "There have been numerous Bigfoot sightings in the United States and around the world. The humanlike creatures are usually said to be large and hairy with glowing eyes. During the summer of 1988, however, residents of Bishopville, South Carolina, reported accounts of a rare breed of Bigfoot: A SEVEN-FOOT-TALL LIZARD MAN WITH GREEN SCALY SKIN. According to witnesses, unlike other Bigfoot creatures Lizard Man has only three toes on each foot, as well as long apelike arms that end in three fingers tipped with FOUR-INCH CLAWS. Only the second Bigfoot to have only three fingers on each hand, and the first (discovered by Berlitz - Branton) to also have three toes on each foot. Lizard Man is the most unusual Bigfoot ever reported. "Seventeen-year-old Chris Davis first encountered Lizard Man around 2:00 A.S. on June 29. On his way home, the teen stopped near the brackish waters of Scape Ore Swamp outside Bishopville to change a flat tire. While replacing the jack in the car's trunk, he glimpsed something running across the field toward him. Jumping into his 1976 Toyota Celica, he was quickly engaged in a tug-of-war with the reptilian creature as he tried to pull the door closed. Then Lizard Man jumped onto the car's roof, where he left scratches in the paint as evidence of his attack. "Hysterical, Davis returned home and told only his parents and a few close friends about the experience. Law enforcement officers, however, interrogated him after neighbors said the boy might know something about the strange bite marks and scratches found on another car. "Davis wasn't alone in his report. Soon other reports were flooding the sheriff's office. Teenagers Rodney Nolfe and Shane Stokes, for example, were driving near the swamp with their girlfriends when Lizard Man darted across the road in front of their car. Construction worker George Holloman also claimed Lizard Man jumped at him as he was collecting water from an artesian well. "Investigating the area around the swamp, state trooper Mike Hodge and Lee County deputy sheriff Wayne Atkinson found three crumbled, forty-gallon cardboard drums. The tops of saplings were ripped off eight feet above the ground. And there were, according to Hodge, 'humongous footprints,' fourteen-by-seven- inch impressions in hard red clay. Following the tracks for four hundred yards, the officers backtracked and found new prints impressed in their car's tire tracks. According to state wildlife biologists, the footprints matched no known animal species." (This "Lizard Man" sighting was covered in one of the episodes of Tim White's "SIGHTINGS" documentary, "MONSTERS" segment, on the Fox Network - Branton).

Plesiosaur and Giant Eel Bunyips

I would say that the Longnecked one shown is a Plesiosaur with falsely assumed quadruped legs, rather like a Sirrush after Ted Holliday.

In New South Wales lies the Hawkesbury River, home to one of Australia’s strangest cryptids. The beast, known simply as the Hawkesbury River Monster, is a kind of aquatic lizard, much like the Loch Ness Monster of Scotland. Descriptions of the creature liken it to the prehistoric plesiosaur, extinct for 70 million years. Sightings report that it is between 7 and 24 meters long [between 23 and 80 feet long-the last is probably an exaggeration]. It supposedly has two sets of flippers and a lengthy, snakelike neck and head. The monster was first heard of by settlers in the 1800s, although there is Aboriginal rock art over 3-4000 years old in the area that describes the creature. The settlers were told stories by the Aboriginals of woman and children being attacked by the moolyewonk or mirreeular, both of them Aboriginal names for the monster that lurks in the river. Much like its Scottish cousin, the Hawkesbury River Monster has gained significant attention from the scientific world. Many hunters and crytozoologists have spent decades trying to locate and/or catch the monster. There have been hundreds of reported sightings, so the odds are the monster hunters will be scouring the area for many years to come.

[The Longnecked/SeaSerpent Bunyip is also known by the traditional Bunyip names such as Yarru
Ya-hu or Yero, or Whowie, confusingly similar to the humanoid Yahoo or Wowie.
The "Big Eel" description is similarly referred to by the same "Bunyip" names, also Bolong-DD]

Muldjewangk
ha!

Deep in the Murray River of South Australia lurks a terrible race of creatures known as the muldjewangk. Details on the creature vary. Some say that they are a race of merfolk.[others that it is a type of  gigantic eel-like fish as pictured]  Others say that it is but a single giant monster. But one thing is constant: you don’t want to mess with them. Supposedly hiding under clumps of floating seaweed, the muldjewangk destroy fishing nets and disturb those who are foolish enough to enter their territory. Though some local elders claim that the muldjewangk no longer exist, they still thrive in stories told to naughty children to keep them from playing by the river after dark.

Lindsay Selby posted about giant Australian eels back at the end of 2009. The photo at left was posted in a followup article posted on a different site. Here is Lindsay's article again:

LINDSAY SELBY: Australian Giant Eel story tantalisingly unfinished

I found the following from 2005 whilst browsing the web:
Wednesday, February 23, 2005. 'Loch Ness' eel frightens tourist”
A monster eel, which is believed to have taken up residence at a Warburton trout farm, east of Melbourne, has reportedly been sighted this morning. The eel, which is said to be at least three metres long with a head the size of a football, has been scaring fishermen at Tommy Finn's trout farm. Farm manager Gary Wales says an Irish tourist got the fright of his life when he encountered the eel early this morning. "Next thing he's banging on me bloody wall on the door of the house, banging, saying 'Gary, Gary I've seen it'. So I flew out of bed right, I said 'how big is it mate?' He said 'big as my bloody car'," he said. The operators of a trout farm are offering a $1000 reward to anyone who catches what has been described as Melbourne's own Loch Ness monster. It is believed the eel washed into the farm's ponds during this month's record breaking storms. source:http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200502/s1308868.htm

Reward offered for Melbourne 'Loch Ness' eel

The operators of a trout farm are offering a $1000 reward to anyone who catches Melbourne's own Loch Ness monster. A giant eel, believed to be around four metres long with a head the size of a football has been spotted at the trout farm at Warburton. It is believed the eel washed into the farm's ponds during this month's record breaking storms. Farm manager Gary Wales says efforts to catch the giant creature have so far been unsuccessful. "We don't want it harmed, this things probably 30-years-old, and he's come here probably by mistake and he's found himself a good little home and plenty of food," he said. "We hope to catch him alive and take him to the Melbourne Aquarium." He says he has never heard of such a large eel before. "No. Maybe it's Nessy, Nessy's offspring maybe, who knows, but no, it's a big eel.

Does anyone in CFZ world know if they caught it and what happened to it? It would be fascinating to study and may well be a relative of Nessie!

Several rumors of New Zealand Taniwhas specify Giant eels. Tony Lucas and I have written each other on that subject before. I mentioned that is sounds like the same (smaller-category) Giant eels as seen in Europe, Eastern Canada and elsewhere in the world and Tony said "It is a worldwide phenomenon"

I've been keeping tabs on the story for the CFZ's Aquatic Monster Study Group and I've not come across any update to this story either. However two things to bear in mind are eels can be very mobile (large or small) so if it is still alive and indeed if the sightings were accurate in the first place there is no guarantee it's not moved on to pastures or indeed lakes new.

Thanks for the comments Dale and Oll. I believe there is some scientific work going on at the Sargasso Sea looking at eel migration. Maybe they will find a giant eel. There are so many reports from around the world that I feel someone will find one eventually. Unfortunately the publicity stunt pulled over Steve Alten's book at Loch Ness has rather dented their credibility.
