"Living Pterosaurs" of Hollywood

Jonathan David Whitcomb states on Facebook: " The sighting near Griffith Park this past Monday (May 13, 2013) now seems to have high honesty-credibility. It was in daylight, flying over a freeway without any wing flapping. The lack of feathers and the head crest impressed the eyewitness. The size was not extraordinary, just bigger than most birds in the area. (This is only the latest in a series of such reports in the area)"

This sounds like possibly another series of sightings of an outsized woodpecker similar to the Ivory-billed woodpecker, already suspected from "Pteranodon" sightings from further North in California and in Oregon. There is a larger species related to the Ivory-Billed woodpecker native to Mexico but it is thought to be extinct. The creature which is reported as a pterosaur perches upright, which no kind of a pterosaur could do. I have written on this matter on this blog before.

The appearance of "Oily Black Skin" impresses witnesses as "Featherless" when actually the appearance is caused by the way the feathers lay down and create a sort of a sheen.

Dragons of Los Angeles

Mar 11 2013

Do you believe in flying dragons? Have you ever seen a large long-tailed featherless flying creature? If so, you’re not alone.
For several days, I questioned the eyewitness by emails, and I interviewed her by phone three days after the sighting. She admitted to me that she did not have time to determine if the three “dragons” had no feathers, for they fly over her car while she was driving on a freeway. Her first impression was that they were large and not birds, assuming it was some kind of stunt, perhaps with kites. She realized they were not kites when she saw their tails move.
She was driving north on the Interstate 5, just east of a golf course on the east side of Griffith Park, in Los Angeles, on Sunday, March 3, 2013. The flying creatures flew almost exactly over her car in the opposite direction. It was just minutes before sunrise, so the sky was no longer dark and she could see the undersides of the “dragons.” They were light colored and had a peculiar shape.
She admitted that she had no confidence in estimating how high they were flying or how large they were. She mentioned nothing to me about the nearby Los Angeles River, but I was struck by its proximity. It’s common for a sighting in Southern California to be near a storm channel or river bed (see “San Fernando Valley Sighting” below). In this case, the creatures were only 150 feet away from the Los Angeles River, a major storm drainage channel, flying parallel to it.
Question: “Did you see any neck on any of them?”
Answer: “Yes, that was another thing that tipped me off that they were not birds. They each had a distinct neck between body and head, that was more narrow and clearly visible.”
Question: “Did you see any feet on any of them?”
Answer: “I did not notice their feet.”
Question: “Is it possible that what appeared to have been tails were actually their feet held behind them?”
Answer: “I suppose it’s possible but they looked a lot like tails to me. Long and thin with a bigger point at the tip.”

Griffith Park Dragons?

This past Monday morning I read an email I received from a woman who encountered three “dragons” flying over the I-5 freeway, just northeast of downtown Los Angeles, on Sunday morning, March 3rd. (I will call this anonymous eyewitness “CGP”)
This morning at about 6 am [later clarified to be within five minutes of 6:10 a.m.] I saw three “dragons” flying over the 5-North freeway between Griffith Park and Glendale. They appeared to be several feet long, with a head:body:tail ratio that was certainly not that of a bird. Their wings were long, angular and pointed and their tails had triangular points. . . . I definitely saw them, but was driving so I could not stop and watch where they went.
[Actually the witness thought they were not birds because there was even a recognisable neck. This is odd because many birds have distinct necks, of whatever length desired, short to long.that a bird's tail feathers can come to triangular points at the ends is also possible. if the "Sordes" silhouette is read upside down and tail-for-head, the flight profile does indeed resemble several known birds].

Sightings of Pterosaurs
A few years ago, a psychologist, Brian Hennessy, was interviewed concerning a reported sighting of a large "prehistoric" creature seen on Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea. The psychologist was not analyzing the mental health of the eyewitness; that psychologist, Brian Hennessy, was himself the eyewitness.

Pterosaur Sighting in South Carolina
The huge featherless creature swooped down over the highway, maybe only "twenty feet" high and only "twenty five" feet in front of the car.

Are bats Food for Pterodactyls in Los Angeles?
During my teenaged years in Pasadena, when I enjoyed watching small bats at night, my younger sister had a friend, Dianne. She told my sister about the big "pterodactyl" she had seen flying around the mountains north of Pasadena.
[There is no evidence for or even any allegation that pterosaurs are eating bats there]

San Fernando Valley Sighting

Only a little over a mile north of the Los Angeles River
A couple was walking their dog at about 10:30 p.m., near the corner of Burbank Blvd and Woodman in the city of Sherman Oaks, California, when they saw a "very large, winged creature" gliding about 300 feet overhead. The woman described glowing or reflective portions of the wings; she described them to me in a way that suggested they were much dimmer than the bright flashes of ropens. [That the winges were merely reflective rather than self-luminous is much more likely]

Further down the page I found this discussion which I feel I must address:

Flying Pterosaur, not a Leaping Ray

Nov 072012
I’ve written about this Manta ray fish story many times already, but we need to now concentrate on the reasons why Dale Drinnon has repeatedly brought up this leaping-fish conjecture. But before getting into his reasoning, let’s review his conjecture. He believes that “many” sightings of reported pterosaurs (the extant living creatures, not fossils) come from people who see a large Manta ray that jumps up out of the water.
Mr. Drinnon insists that any extant pterosaur on this planet must resemble pterosaurs known from fossils that have been discovered and that any deviation in appearance means the creature observed cannot be that type of flying creature. He does not explain why he has taken that stand, but he dogmatically holds onto that position. [This is simply the statement I have made that living pterosaurs should bear some resemblance to what is known from fossils: Mr Whitcomb does not furnish us with any reports which correspond to any real known pterosaurs at all. Two common features in the reports are that the head is reported as much smaller than a pterosaur head and the shape of the wing membrane is wrong, being wide and including the legs and feet when the fossils show long and narrow wings where the wing membrane did not continue on anywhere near the feet. And the Rhamphorhynchids were generally of smaller sizes and certainly up into the range of 20 foot wingspans]

Hypothetical Encounter at a Zoo
Let’s apply that position to fossils in general and to modern creatures in general (why should pterosaurs get special treatment?). How would we react if a paleontologist marched up to the administration office of a zoo and insisted that a particular animal enclosure be labeled “Animatronic – not a real animal?” Everybody else knows that those animals are biological and not fake. Why is that paleontologist mistaken in his dogmatism? He knows that no fossil yet discovered is exactly like what we all see in that zoo enclosure, so he insists that the animals in question cannot be biological. Why is he wrong? (Of course that paleontologist is imaginary.)
Biological Diversity
Almost every adult human in Western society understands biological diversity, whether those adult humans are Biblical Creationists or strict Darwinist Evolutionists. Chihuahuas and Saint Bernards are the same species, regardless of outward differences. Why should pterosaurs drastically differ from the general rule?
Paleontologists know from pterosaur fossils that varieties existed in the past, great diversity in those flying creatures. Why should we be shocked that a modern pterosaur would have one or two or even three details of appearance that differ, in some degree, from already-discovered fossils of pterosaurs? In fact, new varieties of pterosaurs are still being discovered in fossil form. The shock is in discovering that not all their species are extinct, after generations of indoctrination into the universal-extinction dogma.[The argument is irrelevant and spurious. It has nothing to do with the issue which is that none of the witneseses are actually reporting anything like what is known of pterosaurs, especially in cases of birdlike creatures that perch upright on branches or wires, Pterosaurs could not perch.]

Ray Resemblance
Mr. Drinnon emphasizes anything that seems to relate to a Manta ray fish (with sighting reports of pterosaurs) especially the general shape of the body of the Manta ray. But he mentions almost no details, no particular sighting, in most of his writings; what sighting report has a description of a ray shape and was over a large body of water? Two creatures flying together, high over a city in the Philippines could not have been a leaping Manta ray, although Drinnon still wants to hold onto the possibility that it was that fish (because that city is near water). [In this situation the city was on the shoreline and the sightings were on the shoreline, two facts which are easily determined after only a little reseach. That two rays might leap together is common and unremarkable. Mr Drinnon does not feel that endless repetitions of the exact same descriptions makes for interesting reading to his readers. In this case the shape like a manta ray was referred to in the original posting as being similar to the shape of a ropen. That shape has now become a stereotype.]

Rhamphorhynchoid Pterosaur Resemblance
In the second ropen expedition of 2004 (I led the first one), Garth Guessman and David Woetzel interviewed a few native eyewitnesses, in Papua New Guinea, by using a page of silhouettes. Those images (unlabeled except for numbers) were of dozens of known birds, bats, and pterosaurs. Only two natives had a good-enough view of the flying creature (that they called “ropen”) to make a valid evaluate of shape, comparing the images with what they remembered observing on Umboi Island. I have photocopies of the detailed reports of those interviews.
The two natives who had good views of the ropen both chose the image of the Sordes Pilosus, a Rhamphorhynchoid pterosaur: [In point of fact no pterosaur has a wing membrane profile anything like this, and Rhamphorhynchid pterosaurs are notable for having thin, narrow wings]

That silhouette does bear a slight resemblance to the shape of a Manta ray (if we cut off the Rhamphorhynchoid tail vane and the head). [Mr Whitcom has just stated the obvious fact that everything about the image are resembles a manta ray except for the presumed head and tail ends, which could easily be misremembered or misobserved, and that area which does resemble a manta ray is by far more substantial than either the small head or tail areas] But both Jonathan Ragu and Jonah Jim (in two seperate sightings) saw a flying creature that was glowing, not a Manta ray that jumped out of the sea and fell back. In fact, Jonah Jim was miles from the coast, far from any major body of water.[BUT he was reporting the same tradition of the same shape which has now become the standard for accepting any such sightings by Mr Whitcomb and his researchers. And the glowing reports are not realistic but are supernatural. There is no evidence for glowing pterosaurs whatsoever, but sea creatures can be covered by bioluminescent organisms that live in the sea and which cause the glowing effect seen at sea] Ragu witnessed, with his daughter, the glowing ropen flying at or near the northwest coast of Umboi Island. Take the case that the man and his daughter had merely seen a jumping Manta ray, as unlikely as that appears to have been. Why would he have chosen the same silhouette as Jonah Jim would later choose? [because it resembles a manta ray] And why would Ragu report the same strange phenomenon: a glow? [because it is the prevalent superstition conected to such reports: indirect lighting also causes the effect]Those factors practically eliminate the jumping Manta ray misidentification as a reasonable conjecture for these two sightings. [not at all] Ragu and Jonah Jim had surely seen the same flying creature, regardless of how shocking a modern giant Sordes Pilosus may be to Westerners.[There is no reason to identify it with Sordes pilosus, the most famous feature of which is that it was furry]
Mr. Drinnon is mistaken on two major points: The critical sightings that my associates and I have analyzed could not have been misidentified leaping rays, and modern pterosaurs need not be precisely similar, in all details, to those paleontologists know from fossils.[Mr Whitcomb is wrong on two key points: that such reports cannot be based upon the shape of leaping rays when the resemblance to leaping rays is greater than it is to pterosaurs, and in that a creature which does not resemble a pterosaur should be a pteroaur. Think about the glaring internal contradiction that weas just made in that sentence!]
Pterosaur, not Manta Ray
The Four Key Sightings in the Southwest Pacific
[In all of these cases the reports came years later and were possibly misremembered. I had also previously mentioned to Mr Whitcomb that some of the sightings could refer to another alleged cryptid, a giant hornbill, also said to be seen in the area; He has conveniently forgotten the alternative explanation]

Ropen, not Misidentified Frigate Bird
Misidentified sea birds [Frigate bird] are a far cry from how serious living-pterosaur investigations really began.
[Although I do not advocate misidentifications of frigate birds for sightings, others have said so and I have mentioned the fact that others have said so]

Leaping Fish or Pterosaur
No Manta rays would appear to fly through the air together and change directions in the air . . .
[Once again we are talking about sightings and not documentary videotapes or films. They can certainly seem to fly and change directions, and the wtnesses can be misremembering details.]

Pterosaurs Across the Pacific

Pterosaurs Across the Pacific

October 23rd, 2012 at 16:04
Long-tailed pterosaurs, called by the name “ropen,” are reported in many areas surrounding the Pacific Ocean. We now have considerable sighting evidence even in Hawaii, islands surrounded by vaste areas of the Pacific.
Two “Pterodactyls” Observed in Philippines in 2008
According to the eyewitness, “I think we’re not the only ones who saw it, because my classmate told me that there are sightings of this thing in Atimonan, Quezon [Province], just one-half hr travel from Pagbilao, and I was told by the local fisherman there that he saw it several times, flying above the sea.”
. . . Question: Did the two creatures have tails?
Answer: YES! they have long tails about 3 to 4 meters long . . .it is not a bird: They don’t have any feathers.
Question: Did you have a good view of them?
Answer: Yes! I was not the only one who saw it . . .

http://www.livepterosaur.com/LP_Blog/archives/3887

Once again, the last Pterosaurs around did not have tails and the biggest Pterosaurs did not have tails. The outline of such creatures these witnesses report of the broad diamond-shaped wings and body and the long stringy rat-tail plus the consistent estimartes of the wingspan at about twenty feet makes it likely that many of these sightings are actually of Manta rays leaping above the surface: in the case of creatures actually seen above the sea, the identification is pretty certain. A manta with a 20 foot span can easily leap ten feet above the surface of the sea and thus be well above the head level of a fisherman seated in a boat.

Winged Reptoids And More Flying Horribles

Winged Reptilian Sighted in Wisconsin by Man & Son
http://www.unexplained-mysteries.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=81821

[The following report assumes that what is being witnessed is one of the "Boss" Reptoids, a winged "Draco". These Dracos are much larger than regular humans and yet are supposed to be able to fly]
Posted 06 November 2006 - 01:02 AM
IPB Image\

Above is a drawing of a Reptilian humanoid. You can see the bony ridge that extends from the forehead. This is a classic feature of one species of Reptoid.

This particular entity was seen in the mid-90s as a man and his son were hunting for a lost dog by the riverbank in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, in the US. Around the same time, a state DNR warden and separately, a group of highway workers saw what they described as a "reptile man" on Hwy. 13 near Medford. It also possessed wings and was able to fly out of their view. The Medford spot was very near the Black River which winds up from LaCrosse!

And now there has been another recent sighting of a wing-ed Reptilian which occurred on Tuesday, September 26, 2006, on Briggs Road near LaCrosse between 9:15 and 9:30 pm. A 53-year old LaCrosse man(who goes by the name "Wohali") and his 25-year-old son saw the creature almost fly into their windshield. It stared in at them and then swooped upwards into the night sky. (Below is the drawing by one of the witnesses)

IPB Image

The creature was an estimated 6-7 feet tall, had batlike, leathery wings with a span of 10-12 feet, long claws on its feet and "hands" and a snarling expression on the face. They both somehow felt it was angry it had been seen. In seconds, both became physically ill, and the son, who was driving, swerved and then pulled the truck over into the ditch so he could vomit. The son, who wishes his identity kept private, vomited six or seven times. Wohali retched, as well, and both remained sick for an entire week. The son was so frightened by the encounter that he refuses to discuss it.

I believe the nausea the men experienced could be due to the creature being radioactive and/or possessing a hazardous chemical perhaps used during a government experiment. Some people have reported getting sick after seeing aliens and UFO's. Wohali further described the creature: it had "distended ribs, long sort of human legs with claws, huge bat-like wings with 'arms' sort of attached, I remember the teeth and the scream we heard was terrifying."

I think there are several possibilities as to where it originated. It could be an Ultradimensional and have come through a portal, it could've escaped from an underground Reptilian area, and/or it could've been just one more governmental experiment underground that was let loose into the environment. But I think the sightings of two Reptilians in the LaCrosse area over the years is very strange.

I found a map of the LaCrosse area and it shows Lacrosse as running right along the Mississippi River. There was a case a while back of someone seeing a tiny alien in a town bordering a river in Chile. So it would seem plausible to assume that they are appearing near a needed water source.

IPB Image

Also, I found out that there are quite a few heavily wooded bluffs in LaCrosse. This would allow the creatures to stay hidden(for the most part) from society until someone happened to wander into their territory.
IPB Image

The man who witnessed the recent sighting said "I've been living in this valley all my life and have seen some strange things, after all the Mississippi Upper Wildlife Refuge is the largest in the country and right out my back door. It hides lots of strange creatures. But I've NEVER seen anything like this. Rent the movie Bram Stoker, Dracula, the Dracula creature looks like it or better yet like the one in Van Helsing."

DRACO
http://www.think-aboutit.com/Reps/phydes.htm

The Draco reptoids, usually standing seven to twelve feet tall, have been reported to be the royal elitists of the reptoid hierarchy. They are seen far less often than other reptoids types. The Draco are similar in appearance to the Reptoid, but they have distinct physical differences.

Draco have wings. These wings are made of long, thin bony spines or ribs that protrude out of the Dracos backs. The ribs are adjoined by flaps of leathery, blackish-brown skin. The wings are usually in a retracted position. In some instances, such as reported by author John Keel ('Mothman Prophecies), the beings matching descriptions of the Draco have been seen to actually fly by use of their wings. (With the beings neck cranked downwards upon spectators, the glowing red reflective eyes of a flying Draco would appear to be placed in the middle of their chest as described by eyewitnesses.)

[This would not actually work the way it is described and more importantly, it is not what the witnesses are actually describing. Better to leave Mothman out of it-DD]

In several contacts, people have seen reptilian looking beings wearing capes draped over their shoulders and down their backs. The capes may either be a piece of clothing specifically designed for covering the Dracos wings or their retracted, dark leathery flaps might be appearing to be a fabric-like material flowing across and down their shoulders and backs.

What strikes eyewitnesses the most about the Draco beings is that they have horns. (not pictured here). These may be long, bony ridges that run back along their slightly conical heads or they may also be actual, horny protuberances that developed midway between the brow and the top of the Dracos skull. (These classical physical characteristics attributed to the modern image of Satan.)

The Draco types appear to have a much more athletic build than the other reptilian beings. Their upper torsos are extremely lean and their neck muscles splay out from the base of their jaw to their shoulder blades. (Their lean build may result from the physical demands required to fly with the use of their wings?)

DRACO PRIME

Some individuals, who had reported Draco contact, said that there were instanced when another Draco, with white powdery scales, approached and gave the others instructions. In every one of these cases, the greenish-brown Draco beings appeared to be submissive and highly respectful towards those with white scales. This reaction indicated that the Draco hierarchy is a caste system dependant on skin color (and possibly other unknown genetic straits).

Other non-human beings, such as the Greys, have also demonstrated similar respect for the Draco, so they appear to be top dogs in the reptoid food chain. What remains a mystery is whether these are commanders, kings, generals, politicians or simply caste socialites sneaking peaks into advanced 'Black'[illegal] projects of their own.

Without putting too fine a point on it, the Draco Reptoids are Physical Devils. The general appearance is batlike (or even Batman-like) but they are so big that it is difficult to see how they could possibly fly. However, reports could also include reports of Thunderbirds or "Pterodactyls" misundersood and this is explicitely stated below.

Sighting Of Huge Winged Reptile

by Pen » Mon Mar 15, 2010 1:02 pm

I just got this email..... As some of you may know here my husband and I sighted a huge winged reptile as we were walking one night back in 1997. I put it on a crpto site and left it there. Over the years I have received emails from others who have sighted one of these reptiles, but don't want to come forward publically with their sighting. Of course I did on a crypto site years ago and promptly got called a liar. So its understandable why people don't come forward. Makes me wonder just how many other people out there have sighted these things and kept quiet about it.

Anyway here is the email:

Hi there, just caught your story as I decided to google search winged creature sightings from the following story.

Friend of mine and her daughter spotted a winged creature sitting on a road. It was a suburban street with houses etc on a hill (Mt Coolum Sunshine Coast Qld.) As they drove up to it, they saw it was huge and as described nearly took up the whole road. It appeared "Not of this world" .. As she described it kind of like being like a Teradactle (sp?)[Pterodactyl]..Apart from the "WTF is that??" comments, lol. Not sure if it was the same thing you saw but they drove right up to it and it appeared to move slowly in it's take off.. They both saw the same thing and described it the same including how it took off from the ground. . I don't know how to describe the wing movement as she decribed it by moving her own arms but it moved not like a flapping of wings more like curling it up at the side slowly and then seemingly effortlessly taking off. Kind of one movement type thing.

I think it's an incredible story and I believe them 100%, she seems to think that it's not a worldly creature but one from a porthole of some ancient spiritual realm, perhaps this creature can move within these two worlds?

Who knows, definately couldnt be feeding off the enviroment? especially in a populated area etc..(although the sunshine coast is a regional but coastal area). If it does it's scarey to say the least. It's way too big not to be noticed as well... What would it eat? Fish?

Thought you might like to know considering it was in Australia.

cheers.

Here is my response to the person who emailed me:

Hi

Hi there, just caught your story as I decided to google search winged creature sightings from the following story. Thank you so much for taking the time to write to me and let me know of this sighting. This is the second report I have received from someone in Qld of sighting one of these creatures.
They have been sighted in different parts of the world…. PNG, U.S, England and Australia. I have wondered if these aren’t the dragons of ancient times.

As she described it kind of like being like a Teradactle [Pterodactyl].Apart from the "WTF is that??" comments, lol. Not sure if it was the same thing you saw but they drove right up to it and it appeared to move slowly in it's take off..

The report I got from Qld a couple of years ago said it was sitting on the roof of their garage.
Our sighting in Western Australia was over a densely populated area.

They both saw the same thing and described it the same including how it took off from the ground. . I don't know how to describe the wing movement as she described it by moving her own arms but it moved not like a flapping of wings more like curling it up at the side slowly and then seemingly effortlessly taking off. Kind of one movement type thing.

We did not see the creature take off, we saw it soaring on the wind currents… at first it was just a huge dark shadow in the night sky, but when it got over just to the right of us the ground lighting lit up its underbelly…. That was a major shock for me. We watched it fly away until it was just a dot on the horizon.

I think it's an incredible story and I believe them 100%, she seems to think that it's not a worldly creature but one from a porthole of some ancient spiritual realm, perhaps this creature can move within these two worlds?

An other dimensional creature? I have thought the same thing, but its just speculation. Jonathan Whitcombe has gone in search of this creature which has been seen often on a small island off the coast of PNG. He also included our sighting in two of his books… â€Å“In Search of Ropens”. I wonder if you would mind me forwarding this email on to him….. I know he would really appreciate it.

Who knows, definitely couldn't be feeding off the environment? especially in a populated area etc..(although the sunshine coast is a regional but coastal area). If it does it's scary to say the least. It's way too big not to be noticed as well... What would it eat? Fish?

Lets hope it eats fish!! That was a question I had too upon our sighting. You have to admit many people go missing without ever been found, and many of those are off beaches. Not saying that its one of these things but it sure makes your mind work overtime!

Thought you might like to know considering it was in Australia.
cheers.

Thanks, I truly appreciate it. If you would like to pass on my email address to your friend who sighted this creature, please do so. I would welcome speaking to them.

Take care
Pen

PS. When I finally decided to come out public with our sighting, I found a crypto zoology message board and posted the sighting, but was promptly called a liar, which was very upsetting to say the least, when I was telling the gospel truth. I left and never went back to that site. I found another site and just posted my report and left. That is how Jonathan found me, and I discovered that I was not alone in sighting this creature.

I received an email from the lady who saw this huge winged reptile along with her 13 year old that was in the car with her. This women appears to be a very nice person.... She told me she was driving at night, and came upon the creature beside the road, and it leapt up into the air... one of its wings covering her entire car... she thought she was going to hit it. She said it flew off towards Mt Coolum, where there are a few caves. She also told me that she has spoken to someone else who has seen one of these huge creatures. Whatever they are, they must be nocturnal. I have spoken to others too who have seen one of these things, and both hubby and I have too back in 1997.

Excerpt:

I received calls from as far as Canada and China. However, despite the reports of Bigfoot, serpents and even a troll (!), the most unusual call I had concerned a chap from merry ol̢۪ England. This is his story:

‘OK, before I report this I want you to no I’m in no way over the top, crazy, or mad…but one night while driving home from Exeter to Torquay on the A38 a couple of years ago I saw a large winged creature. I had just got to the top of Haldon Hill and as I came to the top of the hill something swooped down and flew up and over my car so close to my windscreen you could have fit a Rizla paper between it! The only way I can explain how these wings looked was the same as how bats wings are but much bigger! The wingspan was wider than my Honda Civic 1.5, I'd say each wing was about 2 .5 metres across.

'I’m seriously not the sort of person to come forward about this type of stuff, I kind of dismissed it until I heard you on Coast To Coast saying that many people had seen things like this. I hadn’t heard of anyone else who had reported this until now so felt I should share with you what I saw. The area I saw this has a lot of thick dense woods….and I mean miles of woods.’

Strange & Unexplained - Flying Humanoids
http://www.skygaze.com/content/strange/FlyingHumanoids.shtml

EXCERPT:

In a 1947 book Russian writer V. K. Arsenyev recounted this July 11, 1908, experience in the Sikhote Mountains near Vladivostok in the far eastern region of what would be the USSR:

The rain stopped, the temperature of the air remained low and the mist appeared over the water. It was then that I saw the mark on the path that was very similar to a man's footprint. My dog Alpha bristled up, snarled, and then something rushed about nearby trampling among the bushes. However, it didn't go away, but stopped nearby, standing stock-still. We had been standing like that for some minutes.... Then I stooped, picked up a stone and threw it towards the unknown animal. Then something happened that was quite unexpected: I heard the beating of wings. Something large and dark emerged from the fog and flew over the river. A moment later it disappeared in the dense mist. My dog, badly frightened, pressed itself to my feet.

After supper I told the Udehe-men about this incident. They broke into a vivid story about a man who could fly in the air. Hunters often saw his tracks, tracks that appeared suddenly and vanished suddenly, in such a way that they could only be possible if the "man" alighted on the ground, then took off again into the air.

COMMENT From MOTHMEN.US:

I had my own sighting in ohh.. Must have been 1980 or 1979.. somewhere around there.. My parents had bought this farm about 30 miles N.E. of Rolla MO.. The day in question was a warm summer day around noonish.. I was out near the pond fishing when I saw a shadow.. I looked up and saw this incredibly huge (about 6 ft long) huge birdlike thing.. It didnt appear to have feathers.. more like fur.... it was dark brown.. not making a sound.. it looked like it was only about 50 ft up in the air.. If even that.. its been awhile ago.. but the image was burned into my mind that I remember it to this day.....

Hi Penny

This thing we saw was not mothman or owlman..... it was a huge flying reptile.... we estimated its wingspan would have been between 30-50ft across. It was huge! When the ground lighting lit up its underside we saw that it was definitely a reptile.

The English person reporting his sighting said:

I mentioned to the witness the reports of Owlman but he stated, ‘The wings were more like a bat, too wide for an owl. I didn’t see the head as it was too fast but the wings reminded me of a pterodactyl. It literally swooped over my car and the car shook, similar to when a lorry goes by on the motorway. I was doing about 65 mph and I wish I’d stopped but at the time my heart was pumping. This thing was more reptile-like in its skin texture and the colour was a beige-brown.’

The one we saw was a ruddy reddish brown colour, and it had a sort of beige in it too in parts. Now a similarity in this report with ours is that we did not see its head either.... it was due to the angle it was flying at, or it flew with its head tucked right back. We saw its underbelly due to the ground lighting, but the rest of it was in shadow.... But we saw it pretty clearly due to it being a moonlit night. I honestly could not move or take my eyes off it.... I just stood there anchored to the spot watching it, with hubby beside me doing the same. He took it a lot more about it than me, with his scientific mind. We stood watching it until it was a dot in the sky in the distance. So there are some strange things in this ole world in which we live. It pays to pay attention. There are obviously creatures of the day, and creatures of the night.

Dinosaur birds all over the internet?? Yes, Pterodactyls. I was looking for images about winged creature sightings and these links about Newly found this bird and that bird and the name Pterodactyls kept coming up.

So, I posted the article below on them. This evening I was going to post a search link but came across a possible attack site. So be careful when searching for info RE this bird. Since it is a hot topic, spammers abound.

Hi Penny

That was a really interesting read.....

Excerpts:

We know that these creatures once existed because of the fossil record. Sightings have continued to this day, and legends abound, but where is the physical evidence that these creatures still exist? One thing that must be first understood is that fossils are anomalous geological artifacts, typically made because of some cataclysm or volcanic disaster. Most animals when they die, naturally or by a predator, simply decay and return to dust. The point here is that a pterodactyl that died in a desert or jungle or mountain crag 1,000 years ago (or even 10) would not have left a fossil behind for us to prove to us that it had been there.

The second thing that must be understood about these amazing flying animals is that they are nocturnal and live only in extremely remote and uninhabited areas of the earth. Even so, there are literally hundreds of reports of giant birds and flying lizards showing up around the world. The most amazing pteranodon fossil ever discovered was at Big Bend National Park in Texas. The park was the site of the discovery of the skeleton of a giant pteranodon in 1975. It had a wingspan of 51 feet and is the largest fossil of a flying reptile so far discovered. Other pterodactyls were much smaller and had wingspans from 8 to 20 feet.

Though pteranodons are believed to have become extinct about 65 million years ago, this may not necessarily be the case. Many creatures which lived at that time are still alive, such as crocodiles, turtles, and the famous coelacanth prehistoric fish. Even the date of the fossil of the giant pteranodon found at Big Bend is in question. Since fossils cannot be dated by any known technical method, their age is guessed at from the geological strata around them, and since the current dating of geological strata is based on the prevailing Uniformitarian theory of slow geological change, the date of many fossils may be radically closer to our own than 65 million years.

Legends of Flying Reptiles

The Chinese have had legends for thousands of years of flying reptiles called dragons, and flying snakes as well- something apparently different. Flying reptile dragon images in China are so prevalent, they can easily be considered amongst the most common of motifs. Are they stylized depictions of real flying animals? The ancient Chinese certainly thought they were.

Almost every Indian tribe from Alaska to Tierro del Fuego has legends of a gigantic flying monster so large that, ". . . it darkened the sun." The clapping of these giants' wings created thunder, so they were known as "Thunderbirds." The Navajo Indians still perform their Thunderbird dance, and tell the legends of the "cliff monster" which lived in a high craggy roost, descending to carry people off to feed to its young. The Haida natives of the Queen Charlotte Islands of British Columbia believe that some Thunderbirds were so large that they could literally pick up small whales from the sea. Much of their art and woodcarving depicts exactly such a capture by a Thunderbird.

It is the most surreal experience to see one of these things in this modern age.... Something you would never, ever expect to see. It makes you realise that there is far more to this world than we are lead to believe. Its almost like we have been lied to all our lives.... I know what we saw, and it was no figment of our imaginations....
It truly makes you wonder about many missing persons. Especially those that suddenly go missing off beaches at night time. One of our own Prime Ministers disappeared off a beach.
A few years back I read a story on the news of a jaw bone being found by a farmer in his field in Qld. I think it was just the lower part of the jaw but nothing else was found. The DNA matched to a man who went missing mysteriously back in 1996. I wondered how that piece of jaw bone got into the farmers field. I have had two people contact me from Qld that have seen one of these creatures. One young man said he was out locking the shed and turned to see one sitting on top of the shed looking at him. He bolted to the house, and called his parents but when they came out it was gone.
If there wasn't so many idiots debunking sightings of these creatures we would be able to with a bit of luck find out more of what they are about.... but due to idiots people do not come forward. Such a pity.

_ thought it might be a good idea to go over the older Queensland story because I recently posted about the Pterodactyl-like "Toothed Birds" and I said before it might have been a Manta ray they were seeing. While I was gathering the current data I also saw the Long island "Manta Ray" report and so I'll reprint that also:

Flying Translucent Ray-Shaped Cryptid - Hampton Bays, New York

I received a very interesting email on 2/3/2011 that described an encounter with a 'manta ray' shaped flying entity on Long Island:

Hello, Lon...

My name is Jeni and I live in New York; I grew up on Long Island and have always loved heading out East - the Montauk Projects, Brookhaven Labs; we've had a lot of experience with the unexplained out here (I've seen a plethora of various types of UFOs on LI since early childhood). I stumbled across your blog and am writing in response to the post "Winged Manta Ray Shaped Cryptid - Near Ashton, WV - 12/3/2004". (NOTE - follow up at Additional Ray-Shaped Cryptid Sightings in WV Ohio River Valley Revealed...Lon)
Date of Event: July, 2006
Time: 9:00 - 10:00 pm EST (estimated time frame)
Weather Conditions: Clear, bright night. The moon was very bright and large and you could see every star as the further east you go, the less 'light pollution you experience.
Location: Traveling West on Dune Road, stopped at the Jetty in Hampton Bays, NY (the end of Dune Road).
My experience occurred sometime in July 2006, right after my father had passed away. I regularly take long drives out to the East end of Long Island and walk on the beaches at night as it's very peaceful and isolated. The beach in Hampton Bays (the Jetty at the end of Dune Road) is particularly nice at night. I've been there at least a hundred times and had never experienced anything out of the ordinary. I took my then-fiancee out there to show him the phosphorescent shrimp that wash ashore as he had never seen them; we parked the car and proceeded to walk down to the water. The moon was very bright that night, so you could look down the long stretch of beach and see everything. We were alone. No other people were on the beach, no other cars were parked nearby and all establishments were closed; it's a rather remote area aside from a few scattered private residences and a few restaurant/bars. Now, a bit about me: I'm an artist, was raised with an open mind, am a healthy skeptic and I don't scare easily.

As soon as we stepped onto the beach I had a feeling of general unease; that instinctive fear that one would experience in the presence of a predator. I chose to ignore it; occasionally peeking over my shoulder at the long, empty stretch of beach behind me but mostly focusing on the tiny glowing shrimp beneath our feet. At one point I felt a presence and again, chose to ignore it as I've dealt with that quite a bit in my 30 years. I had not voiced my unease to my fiancee, so he was completely unaware. About 5 - 10 minutes into our short walk we were both hunched over, his back facing the jetty, mine facing the stretch of empty beach when he started peering over my shoulder, up into the sky. Perplexed, he'd look for a second, then look away - at this point I was still trying to retain my composure and not look. Finally, after a few minutes, he looked over my head and yelled "oh my god! What *is* that?!" - I turned to look and 'flying' directly over my head was this huge creature I'd never seen! I will detail as best I can:

It appeared translucent/transparent; no color whatsoever - no visible structure outside of the motion which indicated what it looked like; now, I myself am a visual artist, so this left a very distinct impression on me. This 'creature' was shaped and moving in the way a Manta Ray would; yet completely transparent! No color at all; I could see the stars through this thing; the only thing to allow the structure any appearance was the moonlight shining somehow on its' exterior!
It was larger than a standard sedan. It's wingspan was at least, from what I could estimate, 10' in width; while it was 'flying', its wings moving up and down. The movement seemed familiar, like that of a gull swooping down and hovering over the shoreline. It was approximately 10 - 15' over my head; it had no visible 'head' or 'tail'; no discernible limbs or appendages of any kind. It appeared and moved exactly as a Manta Ray without the 'Cephalic Lobes' or tail. I was completely awe-struck, but that fear took over and after about 30 seconds of staring at this thing we both turned and bolted toward the car. While running, we both simultaneously jerked our heads to the right in response to a glowing green light which seemed to flash twice (it was not the light from the tower on the jetty, nor was it from any boat; that water was clear). I never looked behind me. We started heading back on Dune Road when we saw what I could only describe as two, smaller 'rays' which moved more like a bat would, flying together from right to left overhead past the car. These two were translucent and had a grayish color to them... strange. They were flying in the direction of the beach, where the larger, more transparent creature was. On the ride home, we spoke about how confused we were, but didn't compare notes on what we had seen - I told him I wanted to wait until we got home to do that.

Now I consider myself a well-educated believer in Supernatural/Paranormal phenomenon and have a long-standing fascination with Cryptids but I always approach everything with a healthy dose of skepticism. As soon as we arrived home, I tore two pages out of a sketchbook, grabbed two pencils and gave one of each to my fiancee, instructed him to draw exactly what he had seen and left the room; I did the same. When we were done, we placed our sketches side by side and they were identical. That was enough confirmation for me. I immediately went online to try to research any reports which would help explain what we had witnessed, but I couldn't find anything at all! It was extremely frustrating. I did report the sighting to the National UFO Reporting Center (www.nuforc.org), but still, until I stumbled across this post, was at a loss for any confirmation or additional reports of this type of creature.

I really would love to hear of anyone else who may have experienced something similar on the East end of Long Island... feel free to post this if you like. I'd love some answers as I'm fascinated by this event. It's so difficult to describe the appearance due to the fact that it was transparent, yet we could see the motion. Almost like when heat rises from asphalt and wrinkles the air... I really was amazed and have no idea what this thing could be!

"It was so beautiful and strange! It reminded me of a sea creature more than anything else, maybe our air is like water to them." - I feel the same way; I instantly felt that it seemed to be 'swimming' through the air. I also believe that it's possible that multiple dimensions are simply a vibration away; that many things are likely coming over and going back from time to time...

Thank you,

Jeni

NOTE: please forward any information similar to this sighting. If you have seen this cryptid, I can post as a follow up and/or forward to Jeni...Lon

--Now I'm afraid Lon is one of the fellows that I have offended with my opinions posted on this blog before and I'm afraid I'd have to say this one report still sounds to me like a manta ray seen at night: it was seen on the seashore and it seemed "Transparent" because it was black against the dark night sky, and similarly no cephalic "Horns" or tail were seen because it was dark. But then on "Phantoms and Monsters" the report segues into another set of reports of stingray or mata ray shaped "living UFOs seen in the Ohio River Valley area, including where "Mothman" reports used to be made. These are white, flat featureless creatures without any obvious heads, eyes or anything else, and they are not birds because they "Swim" through the air with a sort of shivering or rippling motion throughout their bodies.

And I'm not going to call any of the witnesses of those reports on what they say or say they are lying because I had heard similar reports from Indiana in the 1970s: in fact my first story I wrote in my High School newspaper as a reporter was about such "Living UFOs" reported locally. At the time I used the description from one of the reports as their generic name: White Ovals or White Oblongs. And they were one of the first matters I was talking about when I originally joined the SITU, back when Ivan Sanderson was still alive.I had done a survey and had several descriptions of them, including a report at near range with one of the things grounded. On that occasion the witness called it a boneless mass of protoplasm, like a colossal amoeba. In other words, a living Globster.

New Guinea Giant Hornbill

Back in April I mentioned the sightings in New Guinea of a sort of giant hornbill, the Kusa Kap, which was confusing the search for possible pterosaurs (or "Ropens" in this case). To set the stage, I'll quote the last thing I said on the subject:
In the Torres Strait region between New Guinea and Queensland, Australia, there is supposed to be a tremendouis flying bird the same size as the Ropen is said to be (allegedly a twenty-foot wingspan) this is the Cryptid Giant Hornbill the Kusa Kap. Karl Shuker mentions this in his book The Beasts That Hide From Men on page 168, from a statement made by an 18th century Naturalist. I have a very good drawing of one and it is clearly a hornbill, presumably at the size of a large eagle (that is, probably 150% the size of a rhinoceros hornbill, or 200% at most-making it at a 10 foot winspan) I am willing to say that wiotnesses might have estimated its size as twice too large: park rangers have stated that as a general rule of thumb in estimations made of unfamiliar species in other circumstances.

I had always intended to make up another blog posting on this, but right now the main problem is that I do NOT have permission to publish the material in my possession.

Best Wishes, Dale D.

Karl Shuker's text follows:
HUGE HORNBILLS AND TREMENDOUS TAILS
The Torres Straits separates New Guinea from the Northernmost tip of Queensland [Australia] and contains many unexplored islets. According to the 18th century naturalist Luigi d'Albertis, among others,[the area] houses a huge species of hornbill known as the Kusa Kap. The largest known species include the familiar great Indian hornbill Buceros bicornis and the rhinoceros hornbill B. rhinoceros (from Malaysia, the Sundas and Borneo)attain a length of four feet, but these pale into insignificance alongside the Kusa Kap-whose alleged 22-foot wingspan, not to mention its inclination for carrying dugongs aloft in its claws, more closely recall the elephant-transporting Roc! Moreover the noise of its wings flapping in flight is said to resemble the roar of a steam engine! [in the next paragraph it is added that witnesses have indeed likened the sound of a rhinoceros hornbill's flapping wings to the chugging of a steam locomotive-DD]

Subsequently I came across another posting on the matter from Chad Arment.

The Giant Hornbill, Giant Bird in New Guinea

From Nature, (Nov. 25, 1875), V. 13, p. 76.
An interesting letter appears in yesterday's Daily News from Mr. Smithurst, the engineer of the steamer which made the voyage up the newly discovered Baxter River in New Guinea, referred to in Sir Henry Rawlinson's address at the Geographical Society last week. The river seems to be a magnificent one, and could evidently be made navigatable to a considerable distance inland. The exploring party found the banks to consist mainly of mangrove swamps, though, near the end of the journey, high clay banks with Eucalyptus globulus were found. Scarcely any natives were seen, though there were frequent signs of their being about. Mr. Smithurst refers to a very remarkable bird, which, so far as we know, has not hitherto been described. The natives state that it can fly away with a dugong, a kangaroo, or a large turtle. Mr. Smithurst states he saw and shot at a specimen of this wonderful animal, and that "the noise caused by the flapping of its wings resembled the sound of a locomotive pulling a long train very slowly." He states that "it appeared to be about sixteen or eighteen feet across the wings as it flew, the body dark brown, the breast white, neck long, and beak long and straight." In the stiff clay of the river bank Mr. Smithurst states that he saw the footprints of some large animal, which he "took to be a buffalo or wild ox," but he saw no traces of the animal. These statements are very wonderful, and before giving credence to them we had better await the publication of the official account of the voyage. A very fair collection of rocks, stones, birds, insects, plants, moss, and orchids has been made, which will be submitted to a naturalist for his opinion. The dates of Mr. Smithurst's communication are from August 30 to Sept. 7.

[The same legendary bird is also said to live in Queensland but that is also to be expected}

Shuker's illustration on the Kusa Kap.
Public Domain Image: we both own the same book.

Now this might seem to be as far as we could go on the matter but as a matter of fact a certain drawing of a Ropen is circulating around the internet and illustrating articles on "Living pterosaurs". One site I saw discussed all such sughtings together, the Ropens along with the Kongamatos, and called this picture a Kongamato-but in the context of the article that was being used as a generic and not specific term, indicating the whole category of "Living pterosaurs" And this drawing is not only a bird with feathered tail and feathered wings folded bird-style, it is pretty obviously meant to be a kind of hornbill.

Now given the circumstances I suspect the sightings actually made at sea to be manta rays again. But inland on Northern Australia, New Guinea and on the islands in the strait, there could well be a gigantic and still-unknown species of hornbill. How big it gets is a problem.
But it seems helpful that a bird with a wingspan reported as 22 feet across in the original notices became only sixteen to eighteen feet across when fired upon by an experienced hunter (who unfortunately also did not bag the bird, or the problem would be already solved) My guess is that it is the size of the largest eagles, ten to twelve feet across, but in the largest specimens only. And it does not carry off dugongs but it does seem to have some "Thunderbird" stories attached to it independantly from the North American legends (Unless the legends actually are connected, which would also be significant to know). Since the large hornbills might well have a wingspan of 5-6 feet in males, I feel pretty secure at making ten to twelve feet the maximum allowable for the unknown species. It could well turn out to be much less more commonly. And hornbills will commonly eat just about anything they can overpower as well as fruits and insects, so that part is plausible enough also. Perhaps the islander populations tend to be beachcombers and if a dead dugong should happen to turn up, the big birds might well gravitate toward it.(This is similarly my explanation for the association of Thunderbirds with whales)

Ropens, Pterosaurian Sightings And Manta Rays

Pterosaur repoted by Kuhn in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba: Ropen seen in New Guinea.

Various witnesses in warmer regions of the world claim to have seen living pterodactyls as long-tailed creatures with two-pronged heads and long thin tails. No legs or feet are ever reported but wingspans are commonly reported as 20-30 feet across and the long thin tail is commonly estimated to be ten feet long. The surface has no feathers and is leathery and although different lighting conditions make the colour difficult to make out, it is most often darker or black on the back and lighter or white on the belly. A sighting made by a married couple in Perth, Australia, is typical:

' . . . in Perth, Western Australia on the coastline around 10:30 pm. We
were walking along Marmion Avenue between the suburbs of Heathridge and Ocean Reef. This creature could not be written off as a bird as it was bigger than any bird on the planet, it did not flap it's wings (just glided on the air current), it had a ruddy reddish brown leathery skin; (we could see it's underneath as it flew over us at about 100ft up; the glow from all the ground lighting made that possible), it had a long tail and a wingspan that we estimated at between 30-50 feet across.'

[Measurements and altitude more than double the norm and probably both exaggerated]

'My husband and I both have talked about what we saw many times since that night in 1997. . . It had a lizard appearance, and was a ruddy reddish brown colour, bearing in mind that all we could see was its dark shape until the ground lighting hit it, it was only for maybe between 5 to 10 seconds . . . but enough time for us to see it was a living creature. I should imagine a creature that size would have had legs and feet, but we didn't see them. It was gliding across the night sky, flying quite low, without a sound.'

It is a quite consistent feature that the sightings take place along the shoreline or on islands, or actually out at sea and seen from boats or airplanes, and ordinarily for only a few seconds. A comparison of two sightings one in 1944 and the other in 1971, as published on ropens.com, produces the results that both have no indication of feathers; pointed head crest at back of head; overall, dark colour; tail at least ten to fifteen feet long, and a longish narrow tail; loud swishing sound of wing-flaps; one or two seconds per wing-flap; 'prehistoric' appearance; 1944 - on mainland of Papua New Guinea, 1971- Bougainville Is., Papua New Guinea: the 1944 witness Hodgkinson is a professional flight trainer and the 1971 witness Hennessy is a professional psychologist. Neither one would want to damage credibility by sending in a hoax or false report.

There is a problem in all of these sightings (which occur world-wide and in fact are becoming more and more frequent with the passage of years) in that the body conformation is NOT what you would expect of a giant Pterosaur. The giant Pterosaurs were of a type that did not have much in the way of a tail: the tailed pterosaurians were the smaller kinds. Also the assumed wing membrane filling in all the way to the feet and being of a broad rhomboid overall appearance do not agree with the shape of the wings as they seem to be in these pterosaurs (nor yet with the shape of the wing membranes as preserved on fossils). On the other hand, they are exactly as represented in 1960s dinosaur movies and animated cartoons (eg, The Mighty Mightor shows Pterosaurs of that type, actually an imaginary design).

As a matter of fact I had heard of such reports and mentioned the creatures in my first letter to Ivan T. Sanderson in the 1970s. And I soon afterward came up with the solution myself: 'I supppose they could be manta rays leaping out of the water and assumed to be Pterosaurs on brief viewings. The witnesses on shore could get confused if they saw the creatures over land or see when they were remembering about it afterwards'. And in fact the size and shape of the wings and tail in all of these reports exactly correspond to a manta ray when they do NOT corresond to any type of Pterosaurian.

There is more to it than just that: witnesses in New Guinea are also apparently describing a type of very large hornbill (which is also recognised under a different name as a separate cryptid) and the reports of 'Bioluminescence' are basically either 'spook lights' or marsh gas. 'Spook lights' otherwise occur world-wide without any connection to supposed pterosaurian sightings and I would write such sightings off as red herrings in these cases.

Ropen
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ropen is a flying cryptid[1] alleged to live in the vicinity of Papua New Guinea.[2] According to the book Searching for Ropens, it is "any featherless creature that flies in the Southwest Pacific, and has a tail-length more than 25% of its wingspan." On Umboi Island the word "ropen" refers to a large nocturnal creature that glows briefly as it flies.[3] The ropen is the subject of folklore (like a man but also like a spirit) but it's believed by some natives to be a real animal.[4] Descriptions vary, but it is often said to be batlike,[5] and sometimes, Pterosaur-like;[6] although pterosaurs are generally accepted to have been extinct for 65 million years.[7][8] The ropen is believed to be nocturnal and to exhibit bioluminescence.[9][10] Purportedly it lives on a diet of fish,[11] though there have been some reports of the creature feasting on human flesh, especially grave robbery.[12][13][14]

[The descriptions obviously include inferrances that the Ropen is a Demonic or Undead-human rather than a normal living animal-DD]

Investigations
As an attempt to discredit mainstream scientific views on the age of the Earth, several expeditions[15] have been embarked upon by American creationists, including Carl Baugh, Paul Nation, Jonathan Whitcomb,[16] David Woetzel, and Garth Guessman.

In late 2006, Paul Nation, of Texas, explored a remote mountainous area on the mainland of Papua New Guinea.[17] He videotaped two lights that the local natives called "indava." Nation believed the lights were from the bioluminescence of creatures similar to the ropen of Umboi Island. The video was analyzed by a missile defense physicist who reported that the two lights on the video were not from any fires, meteors, airplanes or camera artifacts. He also reported that the image of the two lights was authentic and was not manipulated or hoaxed.[18]

In 2007, cryptid investigator Joshua Gates went to Papua New Guinea in search of the Ropen for his TV show Destination Truth. He and his team also witnessed strange lights at night and could not confirm what they were.

In 2009, the television show Monster Quest conducted an expedition in search of the "demon flyer" but found no evidence of the creature. Later, they had a forensic video analyst examine the Paul Nation video. The analyst could not definitely conclude what was causing the lights, but ruled out vehicles and campfires believing the footage was of a pair of bioluminescent creatures perched in a tree that later take flight.

Identity
As is often the case with cryptids, the Ropen's true identity is subject to debate. Some believe it to be a Rhamphorhynchidae-like creature, while others suggest that the Ropen is a misidentified bat (e.g. flying foxes, which are large fruit bats than can have wingspans up to two metres (six feet), or frigatebird. Flying lights in Papua New Guinea have been reported by not only natives but by Western visitors. Evelyn Cheesman, the entomologist, mentions them in her book The Two Roads of Papua (published in 1935): "baffling" lights that lasted "about four or five seconds." The book Searching for Ropens says that the "ropen" light of Umboi Island lasts for about "five seconds." There is also said to be a creature called "Duah" that is said to be another kind of ropen, but according to Searching for Ropens the correct word is actually "duwas," and it is just another name, in a different language, for the same creature.[It can also mean "Devil" apparently-DD]
