Russian academics are calling for a scientific probe into claims of a 'Siberian Loch Ness monster' in one of the world's remotest lakes.
Researchers using underwater scanners have found evidence of 'Nesski' - measuring up to 33 feet in length - in the deep waters of Lake Labynkyr, says a new report.
Intriguingly, the evidence is at a lake where native Evenk and Yakut people have long claimed an underwater creature lurks.

The evidence includes a picture which, it is claimed, shows the monster, saysthe Siberian Times.
Known as ‘the Devil' [Abassay], testimony dating back to the 19th century says the monster has enormous jaws.
Associate Professor Lyudmila Emeliyanova, of Moscow State University, told The Siberian Times that on her own scientific mission to Labynkyr she recorded ‘several seriously big underwater objects’ with sonar readings.
Images have also recently emerged from a 2006 scientific trip to the lake when strange objects - one of 21ft 4in (6.5 metres) in length - were recorded on a Humminbird Piranha MAX 215 Portable fish-finder at a depth of 138 to 197 feet.

Based on the sonic readings, researchers drew how the creature might look in real-life on the fish-finder's screen.
‘It was our fourth or fifth day at the lake when our echo sounding device registered a huge object in the water under our boat," said Dr Emeliyanova of her own close encounter.
It was clearly alive and too large to be one of the dozen or so known fish species in the lake.
‘The object was very dense, of homogeneous structure, surely not a fish nor a shoal of fish, and it was above the bottom," she said.
‘I was very surprised but not scared nor shocked, after all we did not see this animal, we only registered a strange object in the water. But I can clearly say - at the moment, as a scientist, I cannot offer you any explanation of what this object might be.’

Other similar findings since her 2002 mission mean that a new scientific mission to discover the truth is essential, said Dr Emeliyanova, a biogeographer.
‘I believe there is a mystery in this lake because there is no smoke without fire,’ she said.
She was told an account of two fishermen who were ‘in a 10 metre long boat when suddenly the bow began to rise as if somebody was pushing it from under the water.
'It was a heavy boat, only a huge and strong animal can do such a thing. The fishermen were stuck by fear. They did not see anything, no head, no jaws.’
Another 'sighting' came when a group of Russian geologists were fishing in the lake.
‘Suddenly those in the boat started screaming - apparently they saw a huge head of some creature. Others, who were waiting for them on shore, started shooting, and scared the creature away,’ said a witness.
Monster or myth?: The local population have given testimonies on the monster they call 'the Devil' since the 19th century

A 1953 sighting of a 'monster' in neighbouring Lake Vorota by respected Soviet geologist Viktor Tverdokhlebov was initially covered up by the Soviet authorities.
But now Dr Emeliyanova wants to investigate a theory that the two lakes are linked by underground tunnels.
Strangely, despite being close to Oymyakon, the coldest inhabited town on Earth, the lake does not freeze completely in winter.
There has been speculation in Russia that Labynkyr and Vorota might be inhabited by a school of ichthyosaurs, prehistoric marine reptiles resembling dolphins or sharks, or plesiosaurs, a popular theory concerning 'Nessie' in Scotland which is often depicted with a long neck.
Another version is that relic killer whales could have become marooned in Labynkyr when it was attached to the sea.
Some accounts even suggest the 'creature' makes a hideous primeval cry as it attacks its prey.
‘Personally, I do believe that when the information about something strange circulates among local people for so many years, it just can't be groundless, it means something is there,’ said Dr Emeliyanova.
’I know the local people very well - they are ingenuous but they do not lie.’
She stressed: ‘There are many lakes in Yakutia and around the Indigirka River, hundreds of them, big and small, their shores are more or less populated, but all the talk is about Labynkyr and Vorota lakes, and it has gone on for many dozens of years.
'It makes us think about it. And these stories about the local monster are older than those about the Loch Ness monster.’

'SIBERIAN STURGEON'--It is obvious that the Labynkir-Vorota Lake monsters (and others like them throughout the region) are large fish-shaped creatures with big heads. Beluga sturgeon (Huso) can be as much as 30 feet long, and a really big one might even have a distance of 4-5 feet between the eyes (as measured over the curve and remembering this is an inexact estimate.) the head might seem to be ten feet long (actually somewhat less) and that is what is reported as the "Length of the jaws". Pike do not grow so large and their jaws are not that big in proportion to their length. And I think the reports of a big head coming up out of the water are also sturgeon because sturgeon do do that

So is there a Loch Ness Monster in Siberia?

The Siberian Times reporter
18 September 2012

A Moscow scientist is calling for a new scientific expedition to solve
the mystery of a huge 'monster' claimed to be living in remote Lake
Labynkyr in Siberia.

Known as 'Russia's Loch Ness Monster', the accounts of the creature in
Yakutia predate the Scottish claims yet in many ways are similar.

Intriguingly, too, there are theories that Labynkyr - which has
unusual cracks on its 60 to 80 metre deep floor - is connected by
underwater channels to another lake, Vorota, where monster sightings
have also been recorded, including by respected Soviet geologist
Viktor Tverdokhlebov, an academician not given to hyperbole.

Associate Professor of Biogeography Lyudmila Emeliyanova revealed to
The Siberian Times that on her own scientific mission to Labynkyr she
recorded 'several seriously big underwater objects' with sonar
readings.

She is not the only researcher to have done so.

'It was our fourth or fifth day at the lake when our echo sounding
device registered a huge object in the water under our boat,' she
said.

'The object was very dense, of homogeneous structure, surely not a
fish nor a shoal of fish, and it was above the bottom. I was very
surprised but not scared and not shocked, after all we did not see
this animal, we only registered a strange object in the water. But I
can clearly say - at the moment, as a scientist, I cannot offer you
any explanation of what this object might be.'

The readings were repeated and she became convinced there was more
than one large living object in the pure waters.

'I can't say we literally found and touched something unusual there
but we did register with our echo sounding device several seriously
big underwater objects, bigger than a fish, bigger than even a group
of fish.

'This is why I fully support the idea of a new trip there and extra research.

'I would love to take part in another visit to this lake. I know how
to organise it and know enough good local people who can help on the
spot. It is a hard trip I must say but it is definitely worth doing it
again. This mysterious and very deep lake still has some secret to
tell us.'

Freshwater Labynkyr, some 5,000 km east of Moscow, is mysterious for
another reason, too. It is only around 60 kilometres from the
settlement of Oymyakon - the coldest inhabited place on Earth - yet,
astonishingly, the lake does not freeze over completely in winter, in
contrast to virtually all lakes in the region. The ice that does form,
unusually, can be too thin to walk on. It is not uncommon to driver
cars on lakes in Yakutia in winter: but not Labynkyr.

One unproven theory is that Labynkyr, where much of the rock is
volcanic, is warmed slightly from below by a fissure in the Earth's
crust.

Dr Emeliyanova, from the Biogeography Department of the Geographical
Faculty of Moscow State University, is struck by historical accounts
of monsters in Labynkyr and Vorota and believes they are credible.

They date from the late 19th century, while accounts of the Loch Ness
monster are usually held to have emerged in the 1930s.

On the basis of 'sightings' there has been speculation that Labynkyr
and Vorota might be inhabited by a school of ichthyosaurs, prehistoric
marine reptiles resembling dolphins or sharks, or plesiosaurs, a
popular theory concerning 'Nessie' in Scotland which is often depicted
with a long neck.

Another version has speculated that relic killer whales could have
become marooned in Labynkyr. Some accounts even suggest the 'creature'
makes a hideous primeval cry as it attacks its prey.

'Personally, I do believe that when the information about something
strange circulates among local people for so many years, it just can't
be groundless, it means something is there,' she said. 'I know the
local people very well - they are ingenuous but they do not lie,' she
said previously.

Now she adds: 'I have been on a dozen expeditions to this region and I
can say I know the character of local people quite well. They are
emotional - but are not intended to show their emotions and they are
very true and honest by nature, often more honest than is necessary.
This is why I am not ready to reject all these stories.'

For her another factor is how the stories of monsters in Yakutia
relate solely to these two lakes out of more than 800,000 across this
giant region.

'There are many lakes in Yakutia and around the Indigirka River,
hundreds of them, big and small, their shores are more or less
populated, but all the talk is about Labynkyr and Vorota lakes, and it
has gone on for many dozens of years. It makes us think about it. And
these stories about the local monster are older than those about the
Loch Ness monster.'

Even so, she insisted of her 2002 trip: 'I did not go there to chase
the lake monster: as a biogeographer I was interested mainly in that
very territory, I wanted to visit and study it.

'But, of course, I was curious to see the place which has so many
legends and stories. I did not suppose we could really find something
there simply because we did not plan to spend there enough time. Our
stop by the lake was just for 12 days.

'As a scientist I know this is not enough to locate and study some
unknown creature. I can put it like this, however. I believe there is
a mystery in this lake because there is no smoke without fire.

'I am sure that numerous legends which exist and circulate for many
years just can't be groundless. I read many different legends but the
account below is what I heard with my own ears.

'Several fishermen who visit this lake from time to time say they
experienced the following when fishing from a boat in this lake:
during quiet, and not windy, weather when there were no disturbances
in the lake, some strange waves coming from under the water suddenly
heavily shook their boats.

'It was as if a big body was moving under the water and producing
waves which reached the surface and shook the vessel.'

She explained: 'These stories shook me up, for instance, about a boat
which was lifted by something or somebody. Two fishermen were fishing
in the middle of the lake in late Autumn, they were in a 10 metre long
boat when suddenly the bow began to rise as if somebody was pushing it
from under the water.

'It was a heavy boat, only a huge and strong animal can do such a
thing. The fishermen were stuck by fear. They did not see anything, no
head, no jaws. Soon the boat went down.'

Another account of an entirely separate trip to the lake in August
2006 - where researchers used a Humminbird Piranha MAX 215 Portable
fish-finder - produced results echoing her findings. Images are
available from this trip - some are shown here - but the identities of
those who took part are hidden.

'The conditions were ideal - clear cold fresh water, no big waves,
stone bottom without plants there, no engine on the boat, soft and
slow moving - all this means there were almost no problems for the
scanning,' claimed one of those present.

'Often the device showed the long chain of big fish some 4 meters
above the bottom of the lake, when the depth was about 30-45 meters.

'The further we went away from the shore, the deeper the lake was, at
one moment there was no fish registered for a long period long, the
screen was dead. But all of a sudden it blew up with signals about a
huge shoal of fish, just like a cloud.

'Let me say a word about local fish - all kinds of fish here are
predators, the bottom of the lake is 'dead', stones with sand, very
cold near the bottom, no plants. Fish-predators just cannot swim all
together making such a huge shoal, anybody familiar with Zoology will
understand what I mean.

'This is why it meant nothing else but the huge swimming object with
some air inside.

'We went twice above the object, it was at the depth of 30 metres
(where the floor was 50 metres below). The upper 'fish' was at a depth
of 25 metres, the lower 'fish' at 32 metres. It suggests the object
was seven metres wide. What was it? We can't say.

'I switched off the 'Fish ID' and we watched just pure
scanning.....soon we registered a 'shadow' some 15-17 meters under our
boat, it was about 6.5 meters long. It was pretty clear, it was not a
fish and not a tree. There cannot be fish that big, and a log would
have been registered in a different way. How can it swim under the
water?

'The most active 'shadows' or 'bodies' were registered in certain
parts of the lake when the depth was 42 to 60 metres.'

'The next shadow; the width of the object is about 70 cm, and although
the screen shows its silhouette differently to how we imagined, my
mind vividly paints a picture of a beast, swimming across the echo
device scanning ray.

'Another object was 'caught' at the depth of 20 meters. It was
definitely a live creature - look at the density! - but of a smaller
size, like 2.5 meters.

Perhaps another giant fish. Or a baby of our monster?'

Pictures here show the some of the images seen on the scanning device,
including sketches (drawn on the screen in red) to show how the
'monster' might look.

On another amateur trip to explore the lake, in 2000, Russian traveler
Vladimir wrote: 'There was a signal from our echo sounding device,
something was moving around our net with fish, something very big,
seven to ten meters, it is hard to say because we did not know the
speed of the object.

'And our nerves are not made of iron, there were two of us in the
rubber boat, far away from the shore... we did not want to find it
out, just got away from there...

'There were interesting trails on the water as if something big enough
is swimming not very deep and playing in the water... There is a
strange island there. It is in the middle of the lake and lots of
broken nests of the sea gulls. The gulls were just crushed alive when
they were asleep and did not have a chance to fly away. Some birds
were eaten, some just left there... Who did it?

'In my humble opinion... there are four or five big animals in this
lake, not more. If people do not rush there, maybe they will survive.'

In the 1960s, there are accounts of 'a monster with a long neck coming
up out of the lake making an eerie sound'. Some versions say it was
lizard-like.

In Soviet times and before, the lake was almost inaccessible. Today
that is changing. Travel companies in Yakutsk, capital of Yakutia or
the Sakha Republic, are already offering private trips to visit the
lake, enabling people to carry out their own monster hunts.

This perhaps gives an added urgency to Dr Emeliyanova's plans to reach
the lake and explore it in a fully scientific way: yet funds, so far
not found, are needed to support this venture.

She emphasised: 'Apart from the legends about this monster, this lake
is quite mysterious itself, for instance distances are hard to measure
there.

'Probably it is diffraction of light but still - I mean when you are
sailing in a boat and you clearly see the shore is quite far away, in
a minute you all over a sudden get there and hit the ground.... One
shore is just drift sands. One of the islands on the lake sometimes is
not visible, like a mirage in the desert, it comes and goes.

'There is an amazing fact, too, that this lake is never totally
frozen, not what you would expect as it is not far from the Pole of
Cold.

'But this is the fact, the lake is never fully covered by ice. If it
had been fully covered, we could have closed this story about the
monster forever. It could not survive.

'The question is - why it is not completely frozen? Probably because
of its depth, I can suppose, too, it is somehow warmed from the bottom
but it is not really my part of science and would like to give you the
opinion of some colleague here rather then my suggestion. I met
scientist in Yakutsk who told me they registered the depth of 80
meters in Labynkyr lake.'

There is also 'an absence of plants there... it is another mystery.

'There are 13 fish species in the lake. Of course they eat one
another but not all of them, some would need plants for food, yet
these appear to be absent.'

While she has conducted no research on it, she said that 'some
scientists believe that this lake is connected with other lakes on the
same plateau, at least with Lake Vorota, via some underground tunnel
system'.

Accounts of strange creatures in the lake - often called the 'Labynkyr
Devil' - have been passed down from generation to generation.

One one version the monster is of dark grey colour with a huge mouth
and 'distance between its eyes is just as the size of raft made of ten
logs'. The legend says that this animal is aggressive, it can attack
people and animals, it can leave the water and go on the shore.

A more recent 'sighting' involved a party of geologists some of whom
went fishing on the lake. 'Suddenly those in the boat started
screaming - apparently they saw a huge head of some creature. Others,
who were waiting for them on shore, started shooting, and scared the
creature away'.

Some years ago Itogi magazine analysed the sightings and concluded:
'Comparing the stories we can say that it is 9-10 metres long, 1.2-1.5
metres wide, its jaw is huge, up to one-third the size of its body,
looking like a huge beak with lots of teeth, and there is a sort of
bone-made horn on the top of the animal. The creature was met either
in Labynkyr or in Vorota lake - locals believe these lakes are
connected to each other with the help of underground passages.'

Grasping for mundane theories to explain what the creature might be -
if not a leftover from the Jurassic Age that somehow defied both
extinction and the Ice Age - some have suggested an abnormally huge
and well-fed pike.

Yury Gerasimov, head of the Ichthyology Department of the Institute of
Biology of Freshwater of the Russian Academy of Sciences, is dubious.
'I have never come across such a big pike and I highly doubt they can
exist.

'If we trust the stories about this 'Devil', there must be about 1.5
metres between its eyes. It means the length of its body must be about
7-8 metres.

'Pike do not live so long in order to reach such a big size. There are
two factors that help fish to grow - nutrition and comfortable water
temperatures. Even if nutrition is perfect there, surely the
temperatures are not that high. So in my opinion the view about a huge
pike is a fantastic one.'

Another Russian traveller Sergei Karpukhin, a former geologist who
once spent 35 days alone at Labynkyr, questions two basic premises of
the monster theory. If these monsters were to survive down the ages,
there must be sufficient of them to reproduce. There would also need
to be connections to other lakes, something he disputes.

'A little pack of them, like male/female plus several cubs is not
enough,' he said. 'To survive this population must have such a number
of animals that the lake would be swarming with them.

'Or at least there should be such number of them, that they would not
go unnoticed - given the description of them being quite big, and the
lake is not that large.

'I even think that there will need to be more creatures in the
neighbouring lakes which the Labynkyr ones can be in contact with.
Only then they can survive.

'Now the Labynkyr Devil defenders would, I know, refer to Lake Vorota,
some 20 km away from Labynkyr. This is where Tverdokhlybov saw that
mysterious creature. Here the legend has some extra bits to it, that
allegedly the lakes are connected with some underground canals. I will
argue this from a position of a geologist: it is possible to have two
connected lakes. BUT, when the lakes of karstic origin. There must be
some carbonaceous stones, which can be dissolved by water.

'But there aren't any. The stones there are all volcanic.'

Accounts began reaching the outside world after nine geologists led by
Viktor Tverdokhlebov, of the East Siberian branch of the Soviet
Academy of Sciences, were involved in an expedition to this remote
corner of the then USSR in the summer of 1953, a few months after the
death of Stalin. As they rode on horseback, their guide was the
elderly Varfolomey Vinokurov, a local man.

It took eight years his diary account to be published in a Soviet
magazine and this referred to his own sighting in Lake Vorota - a name
which literally 'Gates' (an unusual name for a lake, perhaps
signifying Gates of the Devil?) while also including historical
accounts he heard from locals.

'30 May. We left Tomtor village, went 70 kilometres up the Kuidusun
Valley, turned left and got to the large Sordonnokhskoe plateau. Ahead
of us there is Lake Labynkyr where there is storage with food and
equipment.

'There are many legends about this Lake Labynkyr. In the evenings
sitting by the fire our old guide told us that a 'devil' lived in this
lake. He is so big that the distance between his eyes, as Varfolomey
said, 'is wider than a fisherman's raft made of ten logs'.

'I heard about this 'devil' before and many times. In Ust-Ner, I heard
that the devil ate a dog. The dog swam to bring the shot duck to the
hunter, then huge jaws raised from the water and the dog just
disappeared in a moment.

'One of the Tomtor villagers told me that one day he found a huge bone
on the shore of Lake Labynkyr. It was like the devil's jaw - if you
put it vertically, you could ride on a horse through it like under an
arch. He said this jaw bone remained near the fishermen house on the
shore.

'I heard legends how a whole caravan perished going under the ice of
Labynkyr. It was spoken that people saw a big horn stuck out of the
ice. People gathered around it on ice and tried to take it out but
suddenly the ice broke and many people and reindeer died'.

'5 June: Early in the morning we got to the shore of Lake Labynkyr and
reached the storage. Comfortable tents with wooden beds and floor and
table awaited us.

'7 June: We are having a rest. Lake Labynkyr is a square, 15 km long
and 3 km wide. I found the ruined fisherman's house on the shore,
carefully explored the house and all around it but did not find any
'jaw bone'.

He did not witness anything untoward in Labynkyr but went on with his
expedition.

28 July: Now we stopped at the shore of Lake Vorota. Mikhail made a
raft and went to measure the depth. It is 60 meters as in Labynkyr.
But the lake itself is much smaller.

30 July: This is what happened today. It was sunny friendly morning,
Boris Bashkatov and I went on a walking trip around Lake Vorota. We
had to climb rocks on the way - about 11 am the way became dangerous
and we decided to go down a bit, closer to the water. Looking at the
water from the rock, I clearly saw a terrace under the water with a
huge white spot on it. But when I looked at the terrace again a minute
later there was no white spot there. 'Maybe sunshine is joking with
me', I thought. But suddenly Boris shouted 'Look! What is there, in
the middle?' We stopped. Some 300-400 meters away on the water there
was clearly seen some white object, shining under the sunlight. 'A
barrel', said Boris, 'made of tin.' 'Maybe a horse got into the lake,'
I said.

Truly, the object was swimming, and fast enough. It was something
alive, some animal. It was making an arch - first along the lake, then
right towards us. As it was getting closer, a strange coldness like a
stupor was growing inside me. Above the water there was big dark grey
body, the white colour has gone. On this dark grey background there
were clearly visible two symmetrical light spots looking like eyes and
there was just stick in the body - maybe a fin? Or a harpoon of an
unlucky fisherman?

'We saw just a part of the animal but we could guess its much bigger,
massive body was under the water. We could guess this looking how the
monster was moving - raising from the water, it threw its body forward
then fully went under the water. At this time the waves were going
away from its head, waves originating under the water. 'Flapping its
mouth, catching fish', I guessed.

The animal was obviously swimming towards us and the waves made by the
animal reached our legs. We looked at each other and immediately began
to climb up the rock. What if 'it' goes out of the water? We witnessed
a predator, no doubt, one of the strongest predators in this world:
such indomitable, merciless and some sensible fierceness was in every
his movement, in all its looks.

'The animal stopped some 100 meters away from the shore. Suddenly it
began to beat against the water, waves went all ways, we could not
understand what was going on. Maybe it lasted just a minute and then
the animal was gone, dived. It was only then when I thought about a
camera.

'We stood for another 10-20 minutes, it was quiet. We went further.

'There was no doubt, we saw the 'devil' - the legendary monster of
this area. The Yakut fisherman was right, the animal had dark grey
skin and the distance between its eyes was surely not less than a raft
of 10 logs. But he saw it in Labynkyr and we saw it in Vorota lake.
They are 20 km away from each other - and they are not connected.

'I recalled that white spot under the water. Obviously, the animal was
hunting at that underwater terrace and we scared it when shouted going
down the rocks.'

There is, now, the possibility that the waters of the two lakes are
connected by a subterranean channel. For Tverdokhlebov, the sighting
reminded him of the killer whales he had seen in the Sea of Okhotsk.

'At first I thought it that this animal is an unknown offspring of
extinct animals who inhabited this area ages ago. But this feeling of
fierceness was so familiar to me - where could I see it?'

In 1945 he had a clone encounter with such a creature when swimming.

'We turned around and some 30 metres away in the water we saw a huge
dark grey body with two light spots and a fin above them. The animal
was looking at us as if it was choosing who to start with.'

He also heard more accounts from locals of 'monsters' in lakes on this
plateau, which some geologists say maybe of very recent formation. An
old fisherman told how he took his net out of Lake Yastrebiny and
complaining it was torn, he nodded his head and blamed some animal.

'I did not pay attention then, thinking it was just a big pike,' he wrote.

'I recalled the stories of the workers who saw holes in the ice of
Lake Labynkyr and one day they saw some grey body through the hole
which disappeared later. Maybe all these stories are not that
fantastic, and they are just a chain of real events?

'But if we imagine it is a killer whale, how could it get here? The
Sea of Okhotsk is some 300 km away, and the plateau is 1 km above sea
level. How would the sea animal survive in fresh water? How did it get
here? Is it alone here or is there a whole family? What do they eat?
How did they survive the Ice Age?

'What is obvious to me - the existence of this mysterious animal is
closely connected with the mystery of the plateau, how and when it
appeared.'

His suggestion of a killer whale led to some ridicule for his account.
Cryptozoologist Valeriy Nikolayev scoffed: 'What killer whale? How on
earth would it get there, miles from sea?!'

'A group of such creatures stranded, perhaps, when this plateau was
cut off from the sea that has gone on reproducing in these remote
parts? No, it's impossible!'

In a book 'Trip to the Cold Pole', author Gennady Borodulin recounts
another tale from Labynkyr in the 1920s.

'An Evenk family of nomads followed their reindeer and reached the
shore of Lake Labynkyr. They decided to stay overnight on the shore. A
five year old child went to the bank of a stream which led into the
lake while adults were busy. Suddenly the adults heard the boy
screaming.

'The father and grandfather rushed to the bank. They stopped on the
edge of water and saw the child being carried away by an unknown
animal to the centre of the lake. It was a dark creature, with a mouth
looking like bird's beak. It held the child and moved away with quick
rushes, then it dived leaving huge waves and dragged the child under
the water.

'The granddad swore to revenge the 'devil. He took a sack made of
animal skin, stuffed it with reindeer fur, rags, dry grass and pine
trees needles, put a smouldering piece of wood inside. He attached the
sack to a huge stone on shore with a rope and then threw the sack far
into the waters of the lake.

'At night there was noise and splashes and terrible screams of the
'devil'. In the morning the waves brought the huge dead animal, about
seven meters long with a huge jaw, almost one third size of the body,
and relatively small legs and fins.

'The old man cut the animal's stomach, took out the body of his
grandson, and buried him on the bank of the stream. Since then this
stream is called 'The Stream of a Child'.

'It is hard to say what happened to the remains of the animal but this
jaw was put like an arch on the shore.'

Could it have really happened? Only a fully fledged scientific mission
can hope to answer whether the Labynkyr Monster is myth or reality.

One Bigfoot for Hubei

One Big foot for Hubei

The home of Bigfoot in China seeks to boost eco-tourism.
SHENNONGJIA, a forest region and long rumoured to be home of the elusive and “mythical” Bigfoot in the central province of Hubei, China, is looking into developing its eco-tourism to boost the region’s economy.
Less than two months after the Shennongjia Nature Reserve was given a 5A-Class Scenic Spot classification, China’s highest official ranking of scenery spots, the region has teamed up with Beijing to seek its help in developing its tourism industry following an agreement signed between Shennongjia and Beijing municipal commission of tourism development, Xinhua news agency reported.
Travel agencies in Beijing will launch several tour programmes, and the Chinese capital has agreed to provide training for tourism professionals in the underdeveloped region, said Shennongjia forest region party chief Qian Yuankun.
Qian believes an eco-tourism boom is impending in the coming years with Shennongjia’s first airport expected to be completed next year.
It seems the big, mysterious, bipedal ape-man isn’t just confined to the US. China and even Malaysia seem to have them too. The sketch above is from johorhominid.org of the Malaysian variety.

Qu Hao, an official with the state-owned Shennong Tourism Company, said Beijing may send chartered flights or trains to Shennongjia during peak seasons as getting to the mountainous region can be challenging.
Located deep in the remote mountains in Hubei, Shennongjia Nature Reserve has long been rumoured to be home of the elusive creature known in China as Yeren or “Wildman” in English. It is often referred to as “Bigfoot” after the legendary North American ape-man.
More than 400 people have claimed sightings of Bigfoot in the Shennongjia region over the last century, but no evidence has been found to prove the creature’s existence. The region is also home to the rare golden monkeys, which are on the verge of extinction and were first spotted in Shennongjia in the 1960s.
Dubbed “Noah’s Arc”, the region provided shelter and protection for animals and plants against glacier activities some 2.5 million years ago.
Shennongjia, with its abundant rain and water resources and a middle-latitude location, is today home to more than 3,700 plant species and some 1,050 animal species. At least 40 plant species and 70 animal species are under key state protection.
Shennongjia was placed on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves list in 1990.

Once Again for India, China, Tibet and Southeast Asia generally we are indicated to have a major kind of unknown primate of very large size that is quite rare, which leaves footprints of human shape but from 13 inches long to over 22 inches long, but 14 to 18 inches are typical. This is identical to the Sasquatch and is probably Gigantopithecus. The smaller mainland ape is called the Mawas in Malaysia, Xing-Xing in China and "Bigmonkey" (Olo-Bandar or Mahalangur) in India and Nepal and it is the type illustrated above as the Malaysian kind in the article above and again to the left. It is an ape related to the orangutan and possibly identical also to the Orang Pendek (Orang Padak in Malaysia)-the classification remains controversial at present. Mawas and Xing-Xing are names which are definitely used to mean orangutan also. One site gives the description which follows:
Also known as the Orang Mawa or the Malaysian Mawa, the Johor Hominid is a bipedal, ape-like cryptid that reportedly inhabits the [248 million-year-old] Johor jungle of Malaysia. Witnesses say the creature is covered in black fur, stands up to 12 feet (3.6 m) tall, and subsists on a diet of fish, fruit, and according to some reports, wild boar. The Orang Asli natives refer to the Johor Hominid as “Hantu jarang gigi”, which translates to “Snaggle-toothed Ghost.”
Reported sightings of the Johor Hominid date back as early as the late 1800s. The latter-half of the last century saw evidence of the creature’s existence in the form of large footprints, each with four toes and roughly 18 inches (45.7cm) long, found in 1995. In 2005, witnesses reported seeing a Johor Bigfoot family, including parents and a juvenile, near the Kincin River, where more footprints were later found. This description is more of the Sasquatch type. I have set the date of the jungle off by brackets because that date obviously represents the date of the bedrock and not the jungle which currently grows on top of it.

Gigantopithecus,_Museum_of_Man,_San_Diego (file name) From Wikipedia

Also at the same time there is the more usual Wildman type to which Ivan Sanderson allocated two categories in the region: one in Southern China and the other in Malaysia. The latter is the more humanoid "Hominid" reported in the Johor region but also in all of the other territories. It also seems identical to both the Iceman, Vietnamese Wildman and Central Asiatic Almas by consensus of opinion of most Cryptozoologists. There is a problem that in any given region, all of these categories could very well be covered by the same name: Yeren in China, Yeti in Tibet and Orang Gugu (gigi) in Malaya. That is why Cryptozoologists have got to be more careful in the names they are choosing to throw around so casually.

Bigfoot News on Bigfoot DNA

The Following is from Robert Lindsay. I personally have no information directly from Melba Ketcham or her study and I would not divulge such information if it came into my hands. But material alrerady published by Robert Lindsa is a different matter:

Bigfoot News September 14, 2012

Olympic Project successful submissions to Dr. Melba Ketchum DNA project revealed. A source has informed me that the Olympic Project submitted ~103 hair samples to Ketchum’s project, and ~85 of them tested presumptive to Bigfoot by DNA. Another ~18 Olympic Project hair samples were apparently from either humans or known animals. Those 85 successful submissions represent anywhere from 5-13 separate creatures.
Apparently all of the hair was gathered in the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state. This makes the Olympic Project the largest submitter to the project.
Updated list of successful samples to Ketchum Project. Here it is:
Rundown of samples in the Ketchum study. This will be updated every time it changes.
Bigfoot samples submitted: Over 200
Presumptive for Bigfoot: Almost 100
# of Bigfoot individuals represented: 20-28
Details of successful Bigfoot samples:
5 hair samples from Golden Ears Provincial Park in British Columbia representing 3 separate creatures – a male, a female and a juvenile from a family unit who were observed together prior to collecting the samples – gathered in 2010 by Randy Brisson of the Erickson Project.
1 toenail from Larry Jenkins in the Grand Canyon area of Arizona.
1 blood sample from JC Johnson in the Four Corners area of New Mexico (skunk in a drainpipe sample).
1 blood and tissue sample of a female Bigfoot representing either “Matilda” or her mother from Crittenden, Kentucky, gathered by the Dennis Pfohl and Leila Hadj-Chikh of the Erickson Project. Sample was obtained by gluing glass shards on a feeding plate.
1 hair sample from David Paulides’ NABS known as the Ulibarri sample from Hoopa Valley, California.
1 hair sample from Larry Surface in Southern Ohio. Surface shot the controversial nighttime Bigfoot video that was pulled from the web a while back.
1 hair sample (possible Dogman) from Joe Black in the Great Smoky Mountains, Eastern Tennessee.
1 tissue (flesh including muscle and fat) sample in the form of a slice of Bigfoot flesh from Mount Haskell, California from the adult male Bigfoot shot dead on October 10, 2010 by Justin Smeja in the Sierra Kills incident.
1 large sample of saliva from the Olympic Peninsula, Washington, collected by the Olympic Project obtained via a Bigfoot licking a trail camera.
1 hair sample from SE Oklahoma collected by TEXLA Cryptozoological Research.
1 blood, tissue and hair sample from a nailboard trap at Snelgrove Lake, Ontario, Canada (presumably successful).
~85 hair samples from the Olympic Peninsula, Washington, collected by the Olympic Project representing 5-13 separate individuals.
That is apparently all or nearly all of the nearly 100 successful Bigfoot samples. The other 100 samples are all apparently from either humans or known animals.
Best Bigfoot samples: Smeja’s Bigfoot steak and JC Johnson’s skunk in a drainpipe Bigfoot blood sample.
Who bailed out Adrian Erickson? Last fall, Erickson was in deep doodoo financially. He was working 6 days a week, 12 hours a day trying to keep his real estate business above water. He was being sued by several parties, including the buyers of his homes. He was under a lot of physical and psychological toll – basically a stress case. His numerous investors were getting upset.
Erickson built a large real estate development in British Columbia called Ruby Ridge. He sold a number of lots but then became underwater with the US recession caused by radical neoliberal capitalism’s unregulated banking sector and massive bankster fraud. This neoliberalism-generated recession affected the whole world, including Canada. Erickson was having a hard time selling homes due to the downturn in the housing market.
He had promised buyers are variety of amenities for their lots including phone and cell coverage, water, sewage lines and roads. With no more money coming in, he was unable to provide these amenities. Through no fault of Erickson’s, his lot buyers were left holding the bag.
He also spent $3 million on his Bigfoot project, the Erickson Project, with no results to show for it yet.
Things looked grim. The prospect of bankruptcy for the business and foreclosure on Erickson’s very nice home loomed.
I’m not divulging too much personal information here as most of this has already been reported in the British Columbia press.
Here it is, 9 months later, and everything has changed. Early in the year, Erickson apparently took his Bigfoot documentary to Hollywood where it was worked on with post-production editing. In the interim, Erickson’s financial problems seem to have evaporated or at least gotten much better. The word we have is that financially, things are going quite well.
This does not make sense. The housing market in BC has not returned since last fall, so he’s not selling anymore homes than he was then. How did he get the money to send the doc to Hollywood to have it worked on? It makes no sense, because at the time it was down there, Erickson was flat broke. How did he get the huge amount of money needed to bail him out of the financial hole? He could not have made it selling lots. Someone must have bailed him out in some way.
Erickson is now happy and calm and is no longer working all the time. He is back guiding hunts and again, and he’s going to Africa soon to hunt. He seems relaxed about the subject of Bigfoot and acts like it is out of his hands and his life.
Whereas previously for a long time, he got angry anytime anyone brought up the subject. On numerous occasions, Erickson said he didn’t want to hear the word Bigfoot ever again. Furthermore, Erickson and Ketchum, who never got along, have now mysteriously become BFF’s.
Logically, none of this makes any sense. The only way this could have happened is that an unknown person or persons with a lot of money stepped in and got Erickson out of his hole by sending a lot of money his way, either via gift or investment.
I suspected that Wally Hersom gave Erickson the cash to get him out of the hole he was in and to send the documentary down to Hollywood.
However, when I asked around, a source close to Hersom emphatically told me that he strongly doubted that Hersom had either bailed Erickson out or even given him the money to take his doc to Hollywood to have it worked on.
There is suspicion that Ketchum is now the owner of Erickson’s footage, but it has been impossible to confirm. However, it does remain a hunch of mine for reasons I cannot divulge.
The events surrounding Erickson and his movie in the last 9 months remain shrouded in mystery.
Photos and video of Bigfoots exist that are better than the Patterson footage. Photos and video have been shot in the past 20 years that are said to be better than the Patterson footage. They are better than the Patterson footage in that it is clearer. At least a couple of them were shot in the Pacific Northwest.
A source who has seen the footage says that there is no way it could have been hoaxed. In both cases, the persons who own the footage refuse to release it because of the Hellish notoriety of publicity that cascades down on anyone who releases purported Bigfoot footage. The crucifixion of Melissa Hovey over her photo is a good recent example.

--By my classification, nearly all "Other" samples excluding the Olympic Hair and saliva sample, and the BC hair samples-possibly also other samples from California OTHER than the Smeja "Sierra Kills" samples-all belong to the Eastern as vs. the Western Bigfoot and should test out as more human overall. The buzz is also that the suspected "Dogman" does not match the rest. I know nothing about the test results of any of this other than what has previousl been acknowledged publically. I have heard and I am pretty sure the Sierra Kills DNA does not match the Olympic hair DNA. The word I have from prior tests is that the Western Sasquatch DNA falls into the same larger category as the modern apes and humans but does not match any of them specifically, and it does not match the "Yeti" or Orang Pendek" hair DNA which is more specifically like orangutan DNA [and so far has not been shown to be a different species from the orangutan]. The Eastern Bigfoot samples always fall into the same general range of almost-human as the Neanderthal DNA also falls into generally. This was my understanding on the matter from before any mention of the Erickson Project. I am still as interested as anyone else to see the results of the study, only in my case I had independantly already heard of other Bigfoot DNA test results from beforehand.

Separating Sasquatch From Sloth

Separating Sasquatch From Sloth
Posted: 12 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT

[Global Warming and Terraforming Terra Reprint]

We have come to understand that there are two bipedal creatures been observed and that they are easily mistaken for each other. The Sasquatch is clearly not particularly aggressive toward ourselves and conforms completely to our expectations of a primate cousin. That is not true for the giant sloth. The sloth is both bipedal and quadrupedal. When that is observed, you have a Sloth. One of the stories here is a report by a man who as a child was rescued by a Sasquatch which again conforms to the mass of date we now have.

What is becoming clear is that the nonconforming oddities been report actually conform to the Giant Sloth which is a much more dangerous creature to confront. In fairness, my own eye is pretty seasoned and I can pick up on the differences rather easily. Right now it is enough to know we do have a difference.

One of these was clearly a Sloth and we also learn the good news that a healthy individual can out run the creature. It is far faster that had been claimed, but its ability to consume meat protein provides plenty of energy for this.

Orange Eyes and the Charles Mill Lake Monster

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 06, 2012

The legend of Orange Eyes dates back to March 28, 1959, when three panic stricken teenagers allegedly encountered a large, bipedal, hairless monstrosity, which rose from a mist covered morass on a desolate stretch of country road. This lane, which is officially named Ruggles Road, runs along the Charles Mill Reservoir outside of Mansfield, Ohio

The first known encounter with Orange Eyes occurred in 1963. According to eyewitness reports, the creature appeared before a plethora of eyewitnesses who described as being approximately 11-feet in height and weighing somewhere in the order of 1,000 pounds.

The horrified wasted no time in arming themselves and forming a posse in order to ensure this massive beast’s destruction, but their efforts were met with failure.

While the origin of this being is shrouded in mystery, there are many who believe that Orange Eyes was once a docile and reclusive creature, which dwelt in a tunnel in Cleveland’s River Side cemetery.

These individuals assert that it wasn’t until a highway construction crew destroyed the animal’s sanctuary in the late 1940s, that it was forced to move into the wooded area near Mill Lake, where it came into more frequent contact with human beings and its attitude took a distinct turn for the worse.

The next recorded encounter with Orange Eyes occurred on April 22, 1968 when a group of children stumble upon the beast.

The final recorded encounter with this creature was said to have taken place in June of 1991, when this creature presented itself to a pair of anglers who were fishing near Willis Creek.

So what is Orange Eyes? The description would suggest that it is a Bigfoot-like being...but has it been confused with another local cryptid?

Nestled in between Cleveland and Columbus, the Mill Lake Reservoir was constructed in 1935 by damming the Black Fork of the Mohican River. Known for its voluminous catfish population, The Lake is also said to be the home of a unique and ostensible amphibious creature named the Charles Mill Lake Monster.

The previously mentioned encounter with Orange Eyes on March 28, 1959, may have actually been the Charles Mill Lake Monster. Three teenage buddies — Denny Patterson, Wayne Armstrong and Michael Lane — claimed to have had a run-in with a horrifying creature. The youth testified that they were cavorting near Ruggles road, near the swampy shores of the Charles Mill Reservoir at night when they saw a strange, 7-foot tall being rise up from the black water front of them.

The petrified boys watched in horror as this colossal creature towered above them. Later they would describe the beast as being a huge, “armless” humanoid with luminous, green eyes and large, webbed feet. Needless to say the teens wasted no time in exiting the scene and were swift to report their unusual encounter. This odd manifestation seems quite unlike any other creature ever reported.

[this unfortunately sounds cribbed from a bad movie - if it has substance, then it may have been a reptile of sorts– arclein]

When local authorities made their way back to the reservoir to see what all the excitement was about, they discovered a series of "tracksthat resembled the footgear worn by skin divers" along the shore. Despite this apparentconfirmation that“something” with large, webbed feet was skulking along the edge of the lake, there were no subsequent reports of this armless beast with glowing eyes.

It goes without saying that the legends of the Charles Mill Lake Monster and Orange Eyes have become intertwined over the years, a fact which is understandable considering that they are both huge, humanoid beasts with illuminated eyes and inhabit the same general area.

The Charles Mill Lake Monster is an armless, hairless, ostensibly amphibious, green-eyed monster with big webbed feet, whileOrange Eyes is more akin to a prototypical Bigfoot-like being in that it is a large, hairy ape-like creature with two arms and orange eyes. So...are these two beings actually the same creature that was described differently?

The following anecdotes and reports (unedited) come from the BFRO website:

-----

Old Hickory Rd in the Summer 1963 - Richland County

This incident occurred about forty years ago and may not be of interest, but I'm going to relate what happened anyway. Two other teenage neighbors and I were sitting in a large yard in a rural setting one summer evening talking. All of a sudden, the property owners dog ran from behind the barn yelping. Our approximate sitting position in relation to the dog was I'd say 70 to 80 ft. What surprised us initially was that this big boxer dog was afraid of nothing. The three of us turned in unison to see a large creature come from behind the barn that I would describe as resembling part bear, part ape and part human. It was about seven feet tall, and it had rather long, dirty, reddish brown hair. I would best describe the creature's gait as a fast "lope." What I mean is that it would bring its right leg to its left and repeat the same movement in a quick manner while swinging its arms in a fully extended and relaxed manner (kind of difficult to describe). It moved from our left to our right. It "loped" across the yard, across the road and into the woods. It was the time of evening that it was starting to get dark. I said to the other two boys...let's get knives and flashlights and investigate. When we had assembled the gear we followed the creature's path to the edge of the woods. Although we were young and full of bravado, we weren't brave enough to actually go into the woods. We instead shined our flashlights into the woods from a safe distance. We could see in the lights reflection two bright pink eyes looking back at us. Well, what little bravado that we had evaporated and we ran home. Although this event occurred about forty years ago, I can still see it in my mind as though it happened yesterday.

[The lope is odd and plausible if we are observing a Giant sloth. It is not plausible for a Sasquatch - arclein]

------

Somewhere between Cleveland and Columbus in one of the little campsite areas along State Route 3, from what he recalls. (He called back to describe the Mohican Memorial Forest as the likely general area in Ashland Co.)

I would be happy to send you a copy of a colored picture I drew when I was 5 years old back in 1943 of what possibly could have been a bigfoot. I was lost out in the woods while camping with my parents somewhere in central Ohio and this large female ape-like creature put me back in our camp. Then I started screaming and my parents who were out looking for me heard me and came back to the camp and found me. I have not showed this picture to many people because they would have thought I was crazy. I was a lawyer here in Summit County for nearly 40 years and I did not need any aspersions cast upon my sanity. I have had two cancer surgeries in the past six months and I would now like to leave the original of this picture as a bequest in my will to the right kind of museum before anything else happens to me. I also hope that thispicture might corroborate the testimony of people with similar experiences whom nobody would believe before. If you don't have the time to look at it, please let me know the address where thepicture can be sent by parcel post or UPS. I am grateful to that blessed creature for my life and would like to honor her memory in some way.

Followup:

Subject stated he remembers being picked up by something. He saw its arm and he was carried. He described that it looked to him like a gorilla woman. She had deep set big brown eyes. Since it was so long ago, he doesn't remember details except that she had a fox-like color of brownish red. It was covered in coarse hair.

He remembered being carried for what he thought had to be over a minute. He described her as fast, strong and bigger than his father who stood five feet eight inches tall. He recalls being held; an odor commonly described as dead or rotting meat. He stated that her teeth looked stained and she had bad breath. I asked, why a woman, and he said he didn’t know but she acted that way. She had no enlarged breasts. He also kept saying she had deep brown eyes but not so deeply cut into her skull.

He said she took him and cut through the forest. He was terrified, she held him in her right arm. He remembers how fast she walked and that she cut through the forest like butter and she knew where she was going. He said he cried hard, was terrified, but she did not hurt him. She took him to a place where his parents eventually found him and she put a heavy branch on his legs so he could not move. Then she left. I asked about her build and he said she was solid with "good shoulders". Since it was so long ago there was a lot he couldn't remember, but he feels she was (even though she looked so hairy) a woman.
[this was clearly a rescue and cleverly done to boot. It was clearly a Sasquatch - arclein]

This witness went on to say he spent the rest of his life not sharing his story but after retiring, he thought "What the Hell" and began sharing his experience. He mentioned that he could not get his parents to believe him. They passed it off as imagination. The only adult he mentioned as believing him was his kindergarten teacher and his father was thought to discredit her by the beliefs she held.

The question "What did your parents think of you being pinned down by the log or branch?" was recently asked of this man. He reminded me that his parents were from the city and in a state of panic (even hysterics) because he was missing. Being frightened so much of the woods in the dark in the rain, they would have figured he would have never survived being lost. He presumed that his parents thought it might be a natural situation such as a branch being blown down by the trees, regarding him being pinned by a heavy branch. . As unlikely as that sounds, it is certainly more acceptable than what he described as happening to him at the time. He feels this report is important in that it may help to influence young people to share any unusual experiences they have had. Back then, he had nowhere to go with it and nobody to talk to about it. When he tried to talk about it he was met with rejection so after awhile, he completely stopped since he only met one adult person who would believe him.

-----

Fall 1991 - The incident in question took place in Ashland County about 5 miles south of Ashland on a one lane country road. If necessary I can go and get the actual township number for the road.

Myself and my best friend at the time were still in high school And we were "investigating" a "supposed" haunted bridge one night. So we went out to this old rail road bridge,(the kind that you can drive through And it is only one lane), and we went there at night. So we preceded to look around and we heard rustling in the woods next to us about 50 yards Away. We didn't think nothing of it so we continued looking around. The rustling began to get closer but we thought that it was a deer or something So we decided to walk up to this old abandoned barn to see what was in it. Well, all of a sudden there was this loud, deafening scream-roar-growl noise And we heard what sounded like heavy footsteps in the field next to us. I saw, running at us on what appeared to be somewhat all fours but it wasn't a massive creature with long shaggy hair. It stopped about 15 feet away and stood up and it had to have been at least 16 feet tall!!! We then took off running for the car and the creature pursued us. By the time we got to the car another was coming down the road and it scared the creature away.

[This is surely a Giant Sloth and it was stalking these two chaps. Possibly unsure what it faced it reared up to attack and then gave chase. The fortunate news is that the creature's running speed is slower than ours. This is a very dangerous creature that stalks and ambushes and will give chase. That is good enough for a lot of meals. - arclein]

Also:

Other then the rustling of trees and bushes and the growl like sound I can't remember anything. We did come back the next day and found Some rather wierd looking tracks or footprints or whatever they were.

The area was kind of set down in a low area with somewhat of a hilly area. There was a railway line that had two tracks and it ran along a raised area that had several one-lane bridges in the area on other roads. There was a small stream that also ran next to the railway bridge and in fact there was two bridges, one for cars and one for the stream. There was An old cow pasture where we actually saw the creature but surrounded that and everything else could be considered a wooded area or forest. The elevation Is not known.

The location was south of the Adario West Road approx 1/2 mile along the creek in Richland County.

I was fifteen or sixteen at the time, 1958, and running a trapline on a creek west and south of Adario, Ohio. It was my third or fourth year of trapping. My dog, Smokey, always went with me and usually chased rabbits while I was checking my traps. That morning, before going to school, I set out to check my traps with a near full moon lighting up the sky. It was a very cold morning. As I started down the Adario West Road toward the creek, Smokey started acting strange and wouldn't leave my side. He started growling a real deep growl, just barely audible. At each spot where I had a trap set, Smokey would sit on top of the bank while I went to check my traps. I was nearing the end of my trap line when I had to go down a steep bank to retrieve a muskrat in one of my traps. This time Smokey came down the bank with me and sat facing up the bank, his growling growing louder. I was just getting ready to reset the trap when an errie feeling came over me. I turned to look up the bank (Smokey had ceased growling and was leaning against me)and saw something I had never seen before until many years later in a documentary on 'Big Foot'. Whatever it was stood approx. seven feet tall and was all covered with long hair, except its face. The face was not exactly human, but not animal either. And there seemed to be some kind of foul odor in the air.

Needless to say, it scared me half to death, but I think I also might have surprised it at the same time. In just seconds it turned and half walked, half ran away. I started up the bank a few seconds later and reached the top of the bank in time to see 'it' cross a six foot high gate leading into a field, without even touching it. I watched it lumber through the field for a minute or so to make sure it wasn't going the direction I had to go, and then started for home. Unfortunately, there was no snow on the ground and the ground was frozen pretty hard. I didn't even think to look for tracks at the time, but thought about it in school later in the day. I decided to go back out and look for tracks after school, but as luck would have it we got about four inches of snow before I got home from school.

I didn't tell my parents or anyone else because I didn't want to loose my freedom to trap and knew my mom would come unglued if she knew about it. I waited several days before checking my trap line again for fear of running into it again, but never did see anything like it again. There are a lot of small woodlots in that area, but nothing of any great size because it is farm country with roads as close as one mile apart. I have no idea where something like that could have lived undetected by someone, sometime. I didn't find out until the early nineties that there had ever been any 'sightings' of such a creature anywhere in Ohio. I thought such sightings were mostly in northern CA and up the coast states into Canada. Anyhow, that's about as much as I can remember after forty-five years.

Followup:

Between 1957 and 1960 they had strange incidents around there property that couldn't be explained. One night the dogs were going crazy over something in the yard. The next morning they found a three-foot wide section of wheat field mowed down heading toward the ditch line. He adds the creature had long hair and the arms very straight. The encounter even caused his dog (cross between shepherd/spitz) to sweat in fear.

[This one is likely a Sasquatch. However the lumbering gait and the slight oddness of the face opens some ambiguity]

The following is a full report of sightings in Richland County, OH during July 1978:

SUBJECT: An unusual bipedal creature with large head

DATE(S): July 8, 10, & 12, 1978
\
WITNESSES: Eugene Kline, Theresa Kline and Ken O'Neal

LOCATION: Butler, Ohio; Richland County

INVESTIGATORS: Ron Schaffner (Ron@bfro.net), Earl Jones, Richland County Sheriff's Department

CASE DATA: A brief column in the Columbus Dispatch dated July 16, 1978 read as follows:

BIGHEAD CAUSE STIR IN BUTLER VICINITY

"What has a head larger than its body, bulging red eyes and stands over seven foot tall? Don't know?...Well, neither do the residents of southern Richland County community of Butler"....

The newspaper goes on to explain an offbeat investigation by Butler's acting police chief and the Richland County's Sheriff's department. Both departments debunked the story as a hoax. We spent several hours interviewing the witnesses and found discrepancies between law officials, the press and local rumors. We hope to clarify the events in question.

Butler is a quiet community of 1300. The town offers a wide verity of outdoor entertainment, such as canoeing, hayrides and ski facilities. On the eastern side lies the Mohican State Forest, which provides an unlimited amount of camping and backpacking trails.

The Roger Kline family live on Ohio S.R. 95 at the Butler city limits. Their property extends a few acres back to a branch line of the CSX railroad.(1) Beyond the tracks, lie vast wooded hills and farmland.

The first of these strange encounters occurred on the night of July 8 at 11:00 PM. Eugene Kline and Ken O'Neal, both 17, were walking along the tracks when they heard a strange noise coming from the brush up ahead. The boys turned around towards the left and saw an unknown creature about seven foot tall with large red eyes. The boys instantly panicked. Ken started running back to the house, but Eugene could not move. He seemed to be transfixed to the apparition for what seemed like minutes. Finally, the shock broke and Eugene made his get-a-away back to the house.

Eugene described the creature as being about seven foot tall with a head much larger than its body. It appeared to have red eyes. He further stated that there were no hands or feet visible. They could not give any details as to hair or skin. Both agreed that it made an unusual growling sound.

Eugene's father called the Sheriff's department and they checked the area. They also filed a report. (2)

Within two days, "Bighead" was reported again. This time, the creature was seen by a carload of Mansfield residents. (Names are on police report, but are withheld here due to confidentiality requests.) It was about 10:00 PM, when the group of young adults were at a railroad crossing. They told Bellville Police that a hugh black apparition with red eyes was in a slumped position by the tracks. The authorities were impressed because all their stories matched while being interviewed separately. All witnesses showed signs of fright.

On the night of July 12, the creature was back on the prowl and back on the Kline's property. Theresa and her father, Roger were pitching hay from their barn. A slow freight train was heading eastbound. The train began to sound its horn at long and short intervals. Roger went back to the house while Theresa decided that she wanted to see why the train kept blowing the horn. She had not gone far when she saw a silhouette with two glowing eyes. It omitted a foul odor and a high pitched scream. Theresa threw her flashlight at it and ran.

EVALUATION:

The Richland County Sheriff's department investigated and found no physical evidence to substantiate this creature. deputies remained skeptical and even mocked the stories. According to Butler Police Chief, Phil Stortz, the Klines were probably seeing a wild animal from the Mohican State Park. He could not see how "Bigfoot" could exist in Ohio. (3)

There seems to be a change of opinion from Chief Stortz. According to the Columbus Dispatch, he stated that footprints and unusual hair were found on the Kline's property. When we asked him about his statements, he denied ever saying that and that the press misquoted him.

We arrived at the Kline residence on September 8. Eugene and Theresa were still in a nervous state as they recalled their encounters. They appeared to be intelligent kids with no apparent reason to perpetrate a hoax. Eugene received much ridicule from his classmates. He is familiar with many domestic and wild animals. It is a common practice of his to observe the local wildlife as they approach the nearby creek. Eugene told us that much of that wildlife wasn't seen during the week in question, although the neighborhood dogs barked constantly and the cattle seemed spooked. One dog jumped through a picture window of his owner's home and ran wildly inside the house. No one was sure what spooked the dog, but it was obviously scared. However, this may not be related to the events in question.

[I suspect that the focus on the head was a flight phenomena in which the eyes drill down on a central feature. This was likely a Sasquatch - arclein]

Since there were no specific descriptions of the creature's facial features, we can only speculate as to what it was. The head area is certainly not indicative of our legendary Bigfoot, but that description is probably a bit exaggerated due to a frightened experience. At any rate - Bigfoot or not - this case is extremely puzzling.

(1) CSX abandoned their right-of-way several years ago. The old line is now a paved bike trail.

(2) I have copies of the three original police reports that were filed.

(3) The reader will notice that the Butler Police Chief was the first to use the term "Bigfoot". This wasn't mentioned by the witnesses and we avoid using this term during our investigations.

Faux-Alligator Tracks

Faux-Alligator or Giant Lizard, from Turn-of-the-20th-Century necklace for sale on Ebay

The woman who gave me the sketches of the "Monster Lizard" tracks last time also pointed out to me that similar tracks were represented on the internet, mistakenly identified as alligator tracks. While there is a small area of overlap between the actual alligators and the faux-alligators in the Arkansas-Northern Louisiana area, the faux-Alligator Water Monsters are seen from the Mississippi westwards, including some desert territories and not at all where you would expect to find regular alligators. A Folklore map printed by LIFE magazine in the 1950s identified these creatures as "Water Monsters" but gave no more identifying characteristics. From the information at hand, I take these to be the Whangdoodles and Gowrows of the Ozarks area, and possibly some old books would so identify these tracks. The main outstanding characteristic of such reports we have (and the corresponding artwork) is that the creatures have a row of spines down the middle of the back exactly like the row of spines belonging to the large male iguana lizards and these creatures are otherwise stated to look like big iguanas generally

ProTrails trcking reference for Alligator tracks: note that the individual back foot prints are indicated as being ten inches long. This is a "Dinosaur" trackway cited as representing an ordinary alligator trail from a work dealing with animal tracks and referenced on the internet.individual tracks look nothing like the actual Alligator trackway shown below (the trackway in the photo is running to the bottom of the page in the opposite direction of the trackway in the sketch, but the difference in the tracks should be reaily apparent)

Such "Dinosaur" trackways are allegedly associatted with the Chan in Mexico and then the "Dinosaurs" (up to including "Diplodocus") in Northwestern South America (Eastern front of the Andes down as far as Bolivia), but I find no such definite illustrations or photographs of them. The three-toed tracks are on the other hand well-attested. Note tail drag marks

The woman informant pointed out specifically that the Make-a-Wish foundation of Texas was using the pattern of the WRONG "Faux-alligator" tracks in one of the projects featured prominently on internet bulletins: the illustrated track has the characteristics of the "Monster" tracks and NOT regular alligator tracks, except that these patterns have four toes (the source originally had five toes, if the links provided below it are indeed the sources that were used, which seems likely.)

About the Make-A-Wish Foundation – Founded in 1980, the foundation has assisted children with life-threatening medical conditions create hope and joy by granting wishes with the help of volunteers and donors.

There is still a continuing series of faux-alligator sightings reported as "Water Monsters" and "Errant crocodilians" in Arizona and particularly in the sources of the Colorado River, the track templates used in the Texas Make-a-Wish project seem to have been provided from the service below (links for forefoot and hindfoot stencils):

And the reference illustration below, and other ones like it seem to be the source. This is a reference drawing published in several government publications abnd still circulating around the internet: one source is indicated by the link accompanyting the illustration here.

Once again, real alligator tracks look nothing like that, real alligator feet have four toes and not five, the heels on the back prints are narrower and more pointed, and the five-toed footprints even show more joints on both the fore and rear footprints th would have. Genuine Alligator tracks shown below.Somehow, the original illustrator had gotten hold of drawings of the unknown alligatorlike monster (whose tracks match these, except they are not webbed) ands as if they were regular alligator tracks. These are also not crocodile tracks, which are also more like the alligator tracks.

This map shows the drastically different climate zone we are talking about which easily differentiates between the two different large reptiles.
